Every day campers participate in fun and engaging YMCA summer day camp programs. Lead Counselors will lead a group of 10-15 youth in various activities throughout the camp, including group games, crafts, STEM projects, cooking projects and more. When you join our team of summer staff, you're signing on for a summer of adventure with energetic coworkers, and plenty of perks like a free Y membership and paid training for certifications like First Aid and CPR. Day Camp season runs June 24th through the end of August, (start dates vary by location) with training the week of 06/15 - 06/21.

Shift Information:

Scheduled for shifts during Day Camp Hours Monday-Friday Between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM

Responsibilities:

What you'll be doing

  1. Assists Camp Supervisor in training, guiding, and overseeing Camp Counselors.
  2. Oversees a group of up to 15 children grades 2-5 to ensure their health, safety and to provide a positive experience for each camper.
  3. Implements program activities. May be asked to assist in planning activities.
  4. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergency procedures.
  5. Professionally engages with parents/guardians to provide pertinent program information and share about their campers experience.
  6. Ensures that equipment is clean, safe, set up and stored properly.
  7. Attends staff meetings and training programs as required.
  8. Other duties as assigned.

MMR Vaccination May be Required: Camp programs require Mumps, Measles and Rhubella immunization in accordance with Department of Children, Youth and Family requirements.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds.

Qualifications:

What we're looking for in an applicant

  1. 18 years of age or older
  2. 12 completed college credits.
  3. 1-2 years experience with children; camps, childcare, tutoring, or nannying.
  4. Experience planning and implementing group activities.
  5. Ability to model and demonstrate Y values: caring, respect, responsibility and honesty.
  6. TB Test may be required depending on camp type or location.
  7. Completion of minimum STARS required training, CPR/First Aid Training*
  8. Cleared Portable Background Check in the statewide registry MERIT.**
    *At hire, or earliest possible training (but no later than 30 days after employment.)
    **At hire, or during onboarding for position.

Preferred Education/Experience

  1. Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.)
  2. High school diploma or the equivalent of one.
