Job Summary

The Lab Manager is responsible for overseeing and managing the Chemistry, Physics and Earth Sciences labs. The position collaborates with faculty and staff in the coordination of curriculum related events for the laboratories and museum, provides instructional technical support to students and faculty and ensures the maintenance of laboratory and museum equipment.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develops, improves and troubleshoots lab experiments and determines quantities needed for experimentsImplements laboratory instructional objectives, timelines, academic prescriptions and learning outcomes for students in collaboration with faculty and chairPrepares and maintains the laboratory payroll Maintains equipment inventory and purchases all materials and equipment necessary to support the laboratory facilities and museum Provides regular updates regarding lab services, resources and other issues as neededWorks with department chair, faculty and staff in coordinating curriculum related events and providing a cost-effective plan of operation for the lab facilitiesFacilitates museum tours and visits, as neededProvides guidance to part-time program personnel, including training, feedback and schedulingEnsures adequate staffing and training of technicians and student assistants to support students enrolled in laboratories Coordinates and implements an annual training schedule for lab staff on Safe Laboratory Practices and Material Hazards, according to the current OSHA and Florida Right to Know Laws and Regulations for University Laboratories Stays abreast of technological innovations, including instrumentation and software programsMakes recommendations regarding appropriate equipment, chemicals, instruments software and learning resources
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Physics, Earth Sciences or related field and three (3) years of related work experienceKnowledge and understanding of College organization, goals and objectives, and policies and proceduresAbility to function independently in the laboratory, including preparing reagents, testing experiments, conducting trials to determine feasibility of modifications of procedures and designing alternate procedures aimed at solving immediate problems, reducing costs, or making most efficient use of available resourcesThorough knowledge of lab experimentsWorking knowledge of the physical and chemical properties of the reagents needed in order to maximize efficient use of current resources and provide sufficient quantities of chemicals and appropriate equipment for all lab sectionsPossess advanced computer and technology skillsAbility to work a flexible schedule that may include evening and weekend assignmentsAbility to work effectively in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic environment with students, faculty and staff
