The Director identifies, develops, and maintains strategic community partnerships to support community-based experiential learning at Wake Forest University. They connect faculty, staff, and students to meaningful curricular and co-curricular opportunities for community-based learning. The Director consults with faculty on strategies to design and execute community-based experiential learning. They integrate community and resident voices and engage diverse stakeholders in the planning and execution of place-based initiatives. They work collaboratively with the entire OCCE team to meet collective goals and achieve the institutional vision for community-based initiatives.Job Description

Essential Functions:

Strategic Partnership Development

  • Identify, develop, and maintain strategic partnerships with community-based organizations to support community-based experiential learning opportunities at Wake Forest University.

  • Develop partnerships with local neighborhood associations, community groups, and resident-led groups in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

  • Develop opportunities for faculty, staff, and students to partner with organizations focused on K-12 education, nutrition and public health, and economic development in Winston-Salem, NC.

  • Coordinate with the Schools of Business, Law, and Divinity and Wake Forest College to structure community-based experiential learning opportunities.

  • Advise graduate and undergraduate students to develop community-based learning and research opportunities.

  • Serve on local, state, and regional committees and task forces, as needed.

Community-Based Experiential Learning

  • Work collaboratively to design, lead, and manage community-based experiential learning programs in the Office of Civic & Community Engagement (OCCE).

  • Direct the Academic Community Engagement (ACE) Fellowship to support faculty as they design community-based teaching and research projects.

  • Consult with faculty members interested in service-learning course development or community-based research projects.

  • Convene and support faculty committee on Academic Community Engagement (ACE) course designation; communicate with departments about ACE course designation and submission process.

  • Host working groups, institutes, and other sessions in which faculty discuss emerging practices related to community-based teaching, learning, and research and connect with others doing similar work.

  • Identify funding opportunities and write grant proposals to support community engagement work, as needed.

Evaluation and Communication

  • Work with other members of the OCCE team to establish ongoing assessment and evaluation of programs, with a specific focus on experiential learning and community partnerships.

  • Conduct site visits and program evaluations.

  • Make data-driven decisions to develop and improve community-based programs.

  • Work with campus and community partners to develop institutional measures and metrics of community impact.

  • Assist in writing articles, briefs, annual reports, etc., to share the impact of community engagement work.

Leadership and OCCE Teamwork

  • Serve as a senior leader in the Office of Civic & Community Engagement (OCCE).

  • Represent the OCCE at community and university functions.

  • Participate in OCCE activities, meetings, and committees.

  • Work collaboratively with Faculty Fellow in the OCCE to connect with academic departments and Schools.

  • Manage area budget.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Master’s degree, preferably in Public Administration, Social Work, Nonprofit Management, Higher Education, or related field; or bachelor’s degree with significant experience.

  • Minimum of five years of progressive experience related to program planning, management, and evaluation.

  • Knowledge of current practices and trends in engaged scholarship, project-based learning, and place-based initiatives.

  • Documented skills in program planning and assessment.

  • Ability to independently plan, manage and meet deadlines for multiple projects with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to work well with multiple constituencies including faculty, staff, administrators, students and community representatives.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as attention to detail and demonstrated experience working as an effective team member.

  • Flexible, adaptable and skilled at balancing multiple tasks and works well under pressure.

  • Outstanding administrative skills, including organizational planning and development.

  • Experience in developing community-university partnerships.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Experience working in higher education.

  • Knowledge of the Winston-Salem community.

  • Established commitment to engaged teaching and learning as part of the university curriculum.
