Department Summary:
The AI-Enhanced Discovery and Decisions Department (L134) within the Artificial Intelligence and Autonomy Innovation Center is looking for qualified applicants for a Group Leader for AI-Enabled Courses of Action. This group leader will lead an innovative team of engineers focused on the use of AI to develop algorithms and methods for generating and evaluating courses of action (COAs). The Group Leader for AI-Enabled Courses of Action will be responsible for interfacing with sponsors and growing the department’s work program in COA generation, applying the work in different sponsor domains and problem areas. The right candidate will enjoy a fast-paced team environment and working with cutting-edge technology. The candidate for this position will work a wide variety of challenging activities in direct support of sponsor programs and will support MITRE’s AI-Enhanced decision support efforts.
Roles & Responsibilities:
The Group Leader (GL) is the first line technical leader focused on the rigor and technical quality of products delivered to our customers. The GL is: 1) a key contributor to one or more projects; 2) the first-line supervisor and primary point of contact on HR matters for the technical staff in their Group; 3) the lead for their respective group, ensuring high technical quality and timely delivery of products to internal and external customers, building and shaping the group’s work,being the primary POC for the group’s capabilities, and overseeing the group’s lab resources and needs.In performing these roles, the GL works with project leads, task leads, and L134 department management to assign the right staff to tasks and projects based on the skills and capabilities required, considering staff development needs and desired work.GLs provide the critical operational leadership for managing staff to deliver tangible products and achieve project-level objectives and outcomes. They are also a key part of hiring and growing our team.

- Technical Contributor – Actively contributes to a technical work program in AI-Enabled COAs and develops high quality technical products resulting in successful customer outcomes.
- Department and Staff Engagement – Serves as DS for assigned staff providing technical support, conducting regular performance and development conversations, staff advocacy and recognition, and communication with Project/Task Leads on performance.
- Technical Quality/Execution/Capability Development – Assists Department management and leadership team in workforce shaping, work program development, maintaining awareness of emerging technical issues and opportunities.
- Collaboration and Communications – Supports regular communication between staff and Project/Task Leaders, serves as a proactive liaison between staff and Department/upper management, seeks collaboration opportunities across portfolios, and facilitates open sharing of program and/or technical area knowledge with other managers and staff.
Basic Qualifications:
- Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of experience relevant to AI-enhanced COA generation and evaluation with a Bachelor’s degree; or 8 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 5 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
- Demonstrated technical depth in one or more of the following areas: machine learning (including deep learning and reinforcement learning), decision science, human machine teaming, multi-agent systems, automated planning.
- Practical understanding of AI-enabled COA generation and evaluation across different domains (DoD, Services, Intelligence Community, DHS, Industry and Academia).
- Experience leading AI-enabled COA generation work and applying it in at least one sponsor domain.
- Ability to articulate specific challenges for AI-enabled COA generation, discuss critical issues, and identify gaps.
- Ability to obtain a US Government clearance (e.g. DoD Secret).
- This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in related field.
- Knowledge of advances in AI-enabled COA generation capabilities in industry and academia
- Developed, proposed and executed research in the field of AI-enabled COA generation.
