Network Administrator II

Position Summary

Michigan State University (MSU) operates the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) as a user facility for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC), supporting the mission of the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics. FRIB provides researchers with one of the most advanced tools of modern science to study rare isotopes, or short-lived nuclei not normally found on Earth. Hosting what is designed to be the most powerful heavy-ion accelerator, FRIB enables scientists to make discoveries about the properties of rare isotopes, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, and applications for society, including in medicine, homeland security, and industry. User facility operation is supported by the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics as one of 28 DOE-SC user facilities. MSU’s nuclear physics graduate program is a top-ranked program nationally, according to U.S. News & World Report.

This position affords an exciting opportunity to become part of the world-class FRIB Laboratory that enables unique discovery opportunities in nuclear science.

Purpose:

The Network Administrator II will provide support for complex solutions to issues of computing systems. This role is responsible for systems support, systems configuration management (automation), network management, and related programming.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Support and develop FRIB information technology systems in one or more areas: automated Linux system installation, automated Linux system configuration, automated application installation and maintenance in a Linux environment, network services, network configuration.
  • Support and develop the FRIB office infrastructure network and existing NSCL controls infrastructure network to meet the needs of users.
  • Manages complex projects within FRIB project management framework.
  • Independently develops moderate to complex solutions in one or more work areas to resolve system and end-user issues.
  • Recognizes and escalates for additional support more complex issues utilizing knowledge from various team members within the Business IT Department.
Works in an Agile Scrum team process, collaborating closely with fellow developers, project team, and stakeholders. Continually develops skills in technology areas relevant to FRIB work. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to install and maintain network systems.
  • Proficient in networking systems including deployment, security, automation, monitoring, logging, and upgrading.
  • Advanced knowledge of:
  • Linux IT systems
  • version control systems, specifically Git
  • Linux command-line, specifically BASH
  • Ethernet networking technologies; TCP/IP, switching, routing, etc.
  • system virtualization or container technologies: VMWare, KVM, LXC/Docker
Ability to acquire new technology skills and use them to contribute to FRIB projectsAbility to work outside normal work hours as required for system maintenance or repairExcellent communication skills to communicate effectively and credibly, both verbally and in writing with all audiences.Demonstrated analytical skills for identifying opportunities for improvement.Ability to work autonomously and effectively in a fast-paced, complex environment.Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose and problem-solve to develop solutions to resolve network issues.Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business or related information technology field, with coursework in an information technology specialization related to the area of employment; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in an information technology area related to the duties to be performed; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Programming capability using at least one of C, C++, Python OR a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or STEM field with course work in programming
  • Experience with Linux IT Systems
  • Experience with shell scripting, specifically BASH
  • Experience with system configuration management using Puppet, Ansible, etc.
