Position OverviewKU’s Wingspan: Center for Learning and Writing Support offers a portfolio of collaborative, innovative academic support programs and services to students, faculty, and staff. The Wingspan provides individual and group support through its Peer Academic Coaching program, Supplemental Instruction (SI) program, Learning and Tutoring Services, and Writing Center Services. The Wingspan is a part of the University Academic Support Centers (UASC), a comprehensive student support program consisting of two unique centers designed to strengthen the academic skills and written communication of students at the University of Kansas. UASC supports the University’s commitment to the academic success and holistic development of students. UASC programs encourage student participation both in and out of the classroom, support academic and personal development, and link students to other campus and community resources for academic and personal support and development. University Academic Support Centers is a department within Academic Affairs.
Our Peer Academic Coaches will offer in-person and online academic coaching appointments, facilitate small-group accountability sessions (body doubling) to empower all students at the University of Kansas.Job DescriptionSenior Peer Academic Coach (Senior PACs) are current undergraduate peer academic coaches who serve as peer leaders and educators. In addition to coaching hours, they meet biweekly with small groups of peer academic coaches to lead team meetings, conduct make-up meetings and help navigate issues and ideas group members encounter in their work. Senior PACs work collaboratively with the program manager to prepare meeting agendas, design activities, and scaffold learning. In addition, Senior PACs assist with PAC observations, check-ins, and other training and administrative tasks as needed. Two hours per week will be dedicated to Senior PACs facilitation work.
Senior PACs will typically hold this position for a full academic year (August-May). Applications will be reviewed yearly. Exceptions may be made considering other factors that may impact the decision.

As a Senior Peer Academic Coach, you will: (95%)
  • Coach students one-on-one in person and online to discuss better life and academic habits to enable student success.
  • Plan meeting activities collaboratively through regular meetings with the program manager before and during the semester and preparation hours.
  • Lead at least 6 biweekly meetings with peer groups a semester and office hours on alternative weeks to assist members of the group outside of meetings.
  • Share your knowledge and experiences, contributing to a multifaceted, collaborative, and safe learning environment.
  • Liaise between Wingspan’s professional staff and peer academic coaches to share updates and complete reports.
  • Conduct coach observations, complete observation reports, and assist with mid-semester check-in meetings.
  • Assist with additional training and administrative tasks as needed.
  • Complete all responsibilities of the peer academic coach position, such as coaching, training, and workshops, in addition to the role as a Senior PACs.
Other tasks as assigned. (5%)Required Qualifications
  1. Currently employed as a peer academic coach with the Wingspan: Center for Learning and Writing Support
  2. Worked in the Wingspan: Center for Learning and Writing Support for at least 1 semester.
  3. Demonstrated effective coaching practices through observations and client surveys.
  4. Effective communication skills through speaking, writing, and listening
  5. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments)
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Previous experience in leadership roles.
  2. A Federal Work-Study (FWS) award for the academic year.
