Overview

Head of NSTX-U Physics Operations

The successful candidate will become the Head of NSTX-U Physics Operations, and he/she will recruit, train and lead the team of NSTX-U Physics Operators. The candidate will motivate, organize and develop specifications for the real-time algorithms in the Plasma Control System (PCS) for NSTX-U, and inform the development of the PCS hardware and user interface with real-time control engineers. Beyond the PCS, the candidate will assist in the identification and specification of systems needed to meet operations objectives.

A proud U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratory managed by Princeton University, Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) is a longstanding leader in the science and innovation behind the development of fusion energy — a clean, safe, and virtually limitless energy source. With an eye on the future and in response to national priorities, PPPL also has begun a strategic shift from a singular focus on fusion energy to a multi-focus approach that includes microelectronics, quantum information science, and sustainability science. Whether it be through science, engineering, technology or professional services, every team member has an opportunity to make their mark on our world. PPPL aims to attract and support people with a rich variety of backgrounds, interests, experiences, and cultural viewpoints. We are committed to equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility and believe that each member of our team contributes to our scientific mission in their own unique way. Come join us

Responsibilities

Core Duties

The successful candidate will become the Head of NSTX-U Physics Operations, and he/she will recruit, train and lead the team of NSTX-U Physics Operators. The candidate will also motivate, organize and develop specifications for the real-time algorithms in the Plasma Control System (PCS) for NSTX-U, and inform the development of the PCS hardware and user interface with real-time control engineers. Other responsibilities include maintaining reference and training material for the Physics Operation team, support the Head of Research Operations in the development of plasma operations commissioning plans, definition of the operation envelope and execution of the Daily Operations Schedule, and inform the development of computing, data visualization and scheduling tools that enhance the efficiency of NSTX-U operations. The Head of NSTX-U Physics Operations is part of the team that reviews and approves commissioning and research run plans. The candidate will also be expected to lead commissioning activities, participate in and lead physics experiments and perform analysis that supports the NSTX-U Five-Year Research Plan and improves the operational efficiency of NSTX-U.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in plasma physics, nuclear engineering, or a related field. Strong experimental, analytical, and English communication skills are required. Experience with fusion science and tokamak physics operations is required. Knowledge of real-time systems and control theory is beneficial.

Working Conditions

Work shifts may vary; typical hours for NSTX-U physics operations are 7:30 - 5:00, but shifts running later in the evening may be anticipated.
