Holyoke Community College has received a grant to support two cohorts of students to progress from Personal Care Technician (PCTs) to Licensed Practical Nurses. Through prior collaborative projects, Springfield WORKS and Baystate Health, HCC has used human centered design to identify barriers to career advancement and design a program to help students overcome these barriers. Participants in this pay-to-train program balance courses and work as they actively engage to prepare for a new career pathway. This grant provides the opportunity for additional tutoring to support students as they return to the classroom. MCCC Professional Tutor reports to the Training Manager. Contracts will vary by semester, with a maximum of 12 - 18.5 hours / week. While most tutoring will be in-person during the day, Monday-Friday, there may also be some tutoring over Zoom or in the evening.Tutoring Subject areas MAY include:
- Anatomy & Physiology
- Nutrition
- Math for Healthcare professions
- Writing
- Biology
- Psychology
- Nursing Prerequisite Courses
- NEX Prep
- NCLEX-PN Prep
- Understanding different learning styles
- Engaging students in active learning
- Identifying students' strengths and deficiencies using appropriate tutoring strategies to assist the student.
- Provide one-on-one and small group tutoring sessions in person
- Providing tutoring over zoom
- Attend tutor training and meetings
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant subject area for the tutoring area, such as nursing, health, education, anatomy and physiology, or closely related field;
- Demonstrated proficiency in subject area;
- Experience teaching or tutoring one-on-one or in small group settings;
- Previous experience working with non-traditional college students, such as working adults ad first generation college students;
- Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds;
- Experience with implementing diverse strategies to meet the needs of adult learners;
- Computer literacy, including proficiency in using on-line learning platforms;
- Ability to communicate and work effectively with a diverse student and staff body.
- Experience working in healthcare settings;
- Bilingual in Spanish.
Part-time, non-benefited, MCCC Unit position
- All candidates must have legal authorization to work in the United States. HCC is not sponsoring H1B Visa.
- Pre-Employment Background check, including Criminal History will be conducted for all positions.
