Founded in 1975, Literacy for Life is an independent 501©3 organization located in William and Mary’s School of Education, Williamsburg and at the Peninsula Workforce Development Center in Hampton. Literacy for Life’s mission is to empower adults by building foundational skills for success in life and work. Literacy for Life provides professional instruction and volunteer tutoring in reading, writing, math, English language, citizenship, computer skills, high school completion (GED and NEDP), health literacy, workplace readiness, and preparation for post-secondary programs.

Position Summary:

Please Note: This is a courtesy posting for Literacy for Life and not a William & Mary position.

Literacy for Life is embarking on a new project which will provide Spanish language classes to businesses in the community. Businesses may select general Spanish instruction to help their employees better communicate with Spanish-speaking co-workers/customers or customized Spanish classes to address contextualized language needed in the workplace. Examples of contextualized Spanish might be communicating safety policies and procedures to Spanish-speaking employees.

Additionally, beginning-level Spanish language classes will be offered for community members at Literacy for Life’s offices.

This is a contract, part-time position.

Function: To deliver Spanish instruction to adult learners

Specific Duties:
• Prepare and teach in-person, beginner-level Spanish classes
• Liaise with businesses who have contracted the classes
• Plan lessons which utilize a variety of instructional techniques, to include individualized instruction, pairing, group work, and whole class instruction
• Maintain and report accurate learner attendance
• Contact students who have missed several consecutive lessons
• Ensure that the classroom environment is welcoming and conducive to learning

Required Qualifications:

College degree required. Experience teaching Spanish in a classroom context. Excellent interpersonal, writing, and presentation skills. Ability to multi-task and work collaboratively. Experience working with diverse populations and/or experience working with adults.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in curriculum development preferred.
