The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is recruiting for an Associate Director (AD) for the Cancer Imaging Program (CIP). The CIP is part of the Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis (DCTD), which is an extramural division of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH). This is a full-time government position in Rockville, Maryland.
This position will serve as the AD within the Office of the Associate Director (OAD), CIP. The AD of CIP serves as the primary NCI official with overall responsibility for research, education, and coordination of activities related to oncologic imaging for the extramural NCI community. This involves the planning, conduct, coordination, and evaluation of a broad array of national and international laboratory and clinical research programs designed to identify and develop new imaging approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, as well as research activities in the field of oncologic molecular imaging (i.e., the development of imaging modalities targeted to specific biochemical or physiological processes in cancer cells). The AD formulates the major overall scientific and operational policies of the program related to a comprehensive and complex series of activities supported by grants, contracts, cooperative agreements, and partnerships with universities, private industry, and other federal agencies. Oncologic imaging encompasses a wide range of fields, including leading technological development initiatives in imaging, such as conventional and interventional radiology, computed tomography, nuclear medicine, ultrasound, magnetic resonance, and photoelectronic imaging.
As supervisor for the CIP staff, 20% of his/her time is devoted to personnel issues, including recruiting, performance evaluations, and budget management. The position is primarily devoted to scientific leadership and priority setting. Given its central role in federally sponsored research into oncologic imaging, the AD will Provide leadership for pre-clinical and clinical efforts in support of NCI's Imaging Drug Group, a collection of programs to stimulate development and dissemination of new imaging agents. The AD will also establish effective partnerships with academia, industry, and other Federal agencies to ensure that innovative imaging technology is developed and successfully transferred, enhanced, and commercialized by supporting grants, contracts, and other mechanisms. In addition, the AD serves as a representative for the NCI on many levels including national and international scientific oncology meetings (The World Molecular Imaging Society (WMIS), Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI), American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the American Association for Cancer Research, and others)
Required QualificationsThe ideal candidate will have knowledge of, and experience in, grant and contract processes and policies, broad knowledge of cancer research, and administrative and managerial experience. This includes the planning, analysis, evaluation, coordination, and integration of research support across program areas, across divisional boundaries of responsibility within the NCI, across inter-institute boundaries of responsibility at the NIH, and across the boundaries of responsibility of other Federal and non-Federal agencies which support cancer treatment-related research, including preclinical development of immunotherapies. This also involves a constant assessment of DCTD research program priorities in relation to existing resources for funding to meet scientific objectives at the Program level.
