Description

POSITION SUMMARY: Obtains ablood sample from the correct patient, ensuring that the blood isproperly drawn and labeled following established procedures toassure the proper specimen for the requested testing. Performssimple lab tests, processing blood and other body fluids, sendouts, and other tests as required.  Manages supply inventoryfor the laboratory or Drawsite.  May register and interviewpatients, obtain accurate demographic and financial information andcheck for medical necessity for all Medicarepatients.



Requirements

MINIMUMQUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:  High schooldiploma or equivalent

CERTIFICATION/LICENSES: 

SKILLS:

  • Competent atobtaining specimens and dispensing critical information inaccordance with section, laboratory, and hospital policies andprocedures
  • Must be competent at receivingspecimens and following written procedures for processingspecimens
  • Must be able to read and writeEnglish and be able to communicate effectively
  • Must be able to operate laboratory equipment, computersystems, and manage supply inventory system.

EXPERIENCE:  Minimum of6 months experience in any of the following categories: Phlebotomy,specimen processing, or medical assistant.   Registrationexperience preferred.

NATURE OFSUPERVISION:

-Responsible to: Laboratory Director, Laboratory Manager, DrawsiteManager, Supervisor

 ENVIRONMENT:

- Bloodborne pathogen  -C (Routine Exposure Risk. Routine exposure in dailyduties. Exposed to potentially infectious material on a regularbasis and is part of the expected job task). Generally works in awell lighted, ventilated area. Exposure to disagreeable odors,toxic fumes, and high noise levels and fluctuations intemperatures. Position involves high-risk exposure to carcinogenic,hazardous and flammable chemicals; bio-hazardous and radioactivematerials; sharp needles and blades; infectious diseases; toxicfumes. Subject to mental stress from working with infectiousmaterials and reporting results that directly affect patient care.Activities of the job are carried out indoors, at blood drawingstations, or at a desk, bench or bedside. Occasionally, employeesmay be required to transport themselves to perform their duties atHealth Fairs or a patient’s place of residence.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: May berequired to work more than a standard shift as dictated byworkload, staffing, and equipment failure. Sitting, standing, andstooping may be involved throughout the entire shift. Workoccasionally requires safe waist-high lifting and transferring ofpediatric and adult patients, usually with assistance. Pushing andpulling up to adult weights may be required. Higher than shoulderreaching may also be required.  Ability to unpack and stocksupplies lifting
