Job Summary:

Christus Health is seeking a skilled Lab Assistant Phlebotomy Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our laboratory staff, you will be responsible for obtaining blood samples from patients, ensuring accurate labeling and processing of specimens, and performing simple laboratory tests.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Obtain blood samples from patients, following established procedures to ensure accurate and timely processing of specimens.
  • Perform simple laboratory tests, such as processing blood and other body fluids, and sending out specimens for testing.
  • Manage laboratory supply inventory, ensuring that necessary materials are available for testing and procedures.
  • Register and interview patients, obtaining accurate demographic and financial information, and verifying medical necessity for Medicare patients.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 6 months experience in phlebotomy, specimen processing, or medical assisting.
  • Registration experience preferred.
  • Ability to read and write English, and communicate effectively with patients and staff.
  • Ability to operate laboratory equipment, computer systems, and manage supply inventory.

Working Conditions:

  • Work in a well-lit, ventilated area, with exposure to disagreeable odors, toxic fumes, and high noise levels.
  • Exposure to bio-hazardous and radioactive materials, sharp needles and blades, infectious diseases, and toxic fumes.
  • Subject to mental stress from working with infectious materials and reporting results that directly affect patient care.

Physical Requirements:

  • May be required to work more than a standard shift, with sitting, standing, and stooping involved throughout the shift.
  • Safe waist-high lifting and transferring of pediatric and adult patients may be required, with assistance.
  • Pushing and pulling up to adult weights, and higher than shoulder reaching may also be required.
