Position Summary:

A position is available for a Research Associate in a newly established metabolomics lab, which will operate within the UNC Proteomics and Metabolomics Core Facility housed in the Pharmacology Department. The metabolomics lab is set to open Spring 2024, and it will be affiliated with UNC School of Medicine’s Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center (LCCC) and UNC Nutrition Obesity Research Center (NORC) within Gillings School of Global Public Health.

The Research Associate will help team members establish the metabolomics lab, including equipment acquisition, establishment of standard operation procedures, establishment of mass spectrometry methods for targeted and untargeted metabolomics and more.

The Research Associate will work with team members and collaborators to design experiments and manage projects. The Research Associate will assist in various aspects of these projects including sample preparation, mass spectrometry analysis and/or data analysis and interpretation. They will contribute to writing reports, manuscripts, and presentations.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

BS or MS in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Nutrition, or a related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

The applicant will have two or more years of post-bachelor’s degree experience in metabolomics or another mass spectrometry-based field. Experience with sample preparation, mass spectrometry analysis and/or data analysis is required.

Preference will be given to candidates with hands-on experience with instruments such as high-resolution mass spectrometers (Thermo Orbitrap, Agilent Q-TOF systems), triple quadrupoles, UHPLC/GC systems, and other similar instruments. This includes operation, troubleshooting and maintenance. Experience with different types of metabolomics software (Thermo Compound Discoverer, MetaboAnalyst) is preferred.

Experience with preparing samples for metabolomics is preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with a working knowledge or experience with cell biology, metabolism, common biochemical techniques and/or statistics.

The successful candidate will work on multiple projects at the same time; therefore, strong multitasking and time management skills, as well as the ability to work independently and efficiently is required.

The successful candidate will work closely with the other Proteomics Core team members, as well as collaborators from multiple labs; therefore, strong communication and interpersonal skills are required.
