Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs

POSITION SUMMARY
The Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs is the chief student affairs officer and reports directly to the Provost/Vice Chancellor of Academic and Student Affairs. The Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (AVCSA) leads and oversees student affairs operations, which enrich and support the academic experience. Assists with crisis response and institutional initiatives; advocates on behalf of students; and fosters collaborative relationships among students, faculty, and staff. The AVCSA is responsible for the management of area’s budget and planning, assessment of operations and use of results to foster improvement, development of policies and procedures to improve operations and support the student experience and advancing the area’s operations. It is expected that the AVCSA will be engaged in daily operations of the student affairs area.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

·Provides leadership and supervision for the planning, organizing, and coordinating of the student affairs units while achieving institutional goals and objectives. Establishes and implements short and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operating procedures; monitors and evaluates programmatic and operational effectiveness, and effects changes required for improvement.

  • Responsible for support services, programs, and policies affecting Student Affairs.

  • Works closely with Institutional Advancement area to develop philanthropic and scholarship opportunities relating to student needs.

  • Provides leadership to establish area and functional goals, objectives, and priorities for staff, and reviews staff performance.

  • Advocate for student needs and in light of the college’s strategic priorities connect and engage with external and internal stakeholders and partners to ensure that students are served holistically.

  • Partners with Academic Affairs to advance student belonging, create cohesive outreach and support system for students from underserved and underrepresented backgrounds that builds strong community connections and attracts the best and brightest minds as well as other related initiatives to enhance student success.

  • Provide divisional leadership related to serving historically marginalized students and equity and inclusion efforts.

  • Represents the college at various community and/or business meetings; promote existing and new programs and/or policies.

  • Exercise administrative supervision over and support assigned areas

  • Develops, implements, and coordinates campus and community-based programs that meet the varying needs of a diverse student population on three campuses.

  • Designs, implements, and maintains an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish the organization's goals and objectives; oversees recruitment, training, supervision, professional development, and evaluation of division staff.

  • Maintains a visible profile both on campus and with external constituencies and engages with the faculty, student, alumni, and staff communities. Anticipates and stays abreast of emerging issues, promotes strong professional development for staff, and remains professionally active in research, and the student development profession.

  • Develops and manages the Student Affairs resources and budgets

  • Assists with campus-wide crisis/emergency response and provides support to students and families in emergency situations.

  • Develops campus publications that promote pride, spirit, and tradition among the students.

Demonstrate leadership in and commitment to the following areas: customer service, customer- friendly processes, functional work teams and continuous process improvement.

MINUMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Demonstrated effectiveness in planning, administration, and personnel, facilities, and fiscal management. Demonstrated effectiveness in working with a diverse student body, faculty, staff, other college constituents, and external organizations. Ability to work collaboratively with other campus units. A strong understanding of governmental programs, agencies, and laws that specifically address university and student issues. Excellent interpersonal communication skills to represent Student Affairs and the college with enthusiasm and effectiveness. Evidence of leadership in professional associations.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Master’s degree from an accredited institution plus seven years of progressive leadership experiences at a college and/or university

RESPONSIBILITY FOR FUNDS, PROPERTY and EQUIPMENT
Shares responsibility for the maintenance and upkeep of assigned facilities and monitoring of equipment.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Excellent oral and written communication skills to convey ideas, facts, and information effectively and accurately to students, staff, faculty, and the public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to prepare and interpret bar graphs.

CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of known variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram formats.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Under the general direction of the Provost/Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, working from policies and general directives.

PLANNING
Considerable responsibility with regard to general assignments in planning time, method, manner, and/or sequence of performance of own work, in addition, the work operations of a group of employees.

DECISION MAKING
Performs work operations which permit frequent opportunity for decision-making of minor importance and also frequent opportunity for decision-making of major importance, either of which would affect the work operations of small organizational component and the organization's customers.

ANALYTICAL ABILITY / PROBLEM SOLVING
Moderately structured. Fairly broad activities using moderately structured procedures with only generally guided supervision. Interpolation of learned things in somewhat varied situations.

Regular use office equipment (desktop/laptop computer and software).

CONTACT WITH OTHERS

Regular contacts with executive cabinet, students, parents, and community leaders. Involves both furnishing and obtaining information and, also, attempting to influence the decisions of those persons contacted. Regular contact with other college employees at all levels within the organization.
