The Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine (KansasCOM), one of the nation’s newest medical schools, located in downtown Wichita, Kansas, invites applications for a faculty appointment in the Department of Integrated Biomedical Sciences. Qualified applicants with experience in teaching medical students and dedicated to teaching physiology/pathophysiology to medical students are sought for an open rank faculty position. This position has no associated clinical duties, and KansasCOM can be flexible regarding appointment (full-time or part-time), and will consider remote, on-line instruction for an applicant with demonstrated excellence and commitment to teaching Pathology.
The College’s mission is “to train the osteopathic physician of the future to provide effective, empathic, and innovative care to optimize the health of patients and their communities.” This includes the goal of expanding health education and healthcare by increasing the number of physicians trained in Kansas, with particular focus on serving the widely distributed communities of rural Kansas, and beyond. KansasCOM’s inaugural class of students (Class of 2026) matriculated in August, 2022. The College has implemented a systems-based curriculum that integrates disciplines, and incorporates interactive methodologies and an androgogical teaching philosophy. The College aspires to promote student learning in a way that values people’s differences and provides an inclusive environment, such that students are enthusiastic about providing patient-centered, evidence-based care of the highest quality.
The successful candidate must possess a terminal degree (PhD, MD, DO, or other), in physiology or a related discipline, and should have demonstrated experience in teaching these subjects. This position will function as a member of a collaborative educational team which develops and delivers the physiology/pathophysiology content across an integrated, educational program. Primary responsibilities will involve teaching medical students, through the integrated, systems-based curriculum of the 1st and 2nd academic years, and will involve the development of discipline-based, collaboratively designed, and highly integrated curricular elements. A demonstrated ability to work within a team of medical educators from basic science and clinical disciplines to develop integrated instructional materials and presentations is a must. Additional teaching and mentoring responsibilities may exist in the 3rd and 4th years, and will focus on the application of foundational science knowledge to senior medical students seeking advanced experience.
While teaching is the primary focus of our faculty, service, scholarship and research are fundamental elements of a faculty role. Service to the College and the community is an essential function of the position, including committee service, faculty development, student mentoring/advising, interviewing prospective students, and community outreach. The College is strengthening its scholarly activity involvement, broadly defined as including: basic science (bench), translational, clinical, educational, public health/epidemiologic, or other scholarly endeavor.
The successful candidate must possess a terminal degree (PhD, MD, DO, MBBS, or other), in physiology or a related discipline, and should have demonstrated experience in teaching these subjects.
