Position OverviewThe Department of Classics invites qualified scholars and professionals to apply for full-time temporary lecturer and/or online lecturer positions for the development and/or instruction of online and/or regular courses. Lecturers are non-tenure-track members of the faculty. Positions vary and are dependent upon the need, if any, each semester, for the development and/or instruction of course(s). The primary role is instruction with no obligations to perform research or service. The appointment dates are from August 18,2024 to May 16, 2025.

Application materials will be reviewed by the faculty and placed in a pool for consideration for developing and/or teaching undergraduate or graduate courses in Classics consistent with departmental instructional needs.

The successful candidate must have appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. before employment begins.

Salary: $44,000. This is a non-renewable, benefits-eligible position.

Salary covers Fall and Spring semesters. Additional (online) teaching with additional pay may be available in Winter (Dec 2024/Jan 2025) and Summer (2025) sessions. The Department of Classics will also offer funding for travel to give papers at AHA, AIA, SCS, or CAMWS.

Job DescriptionRegular Lecturer Duties
100% - Regular Lecturer Duties:

Teach four undergraduate or graduate courses per semester. Teach course(s) in Ancient Greek and Roman History (cross-listed in Classics and History). The opportunity to teach multiple sections of some course(s) concurrently may be available if the successful candidate prefers not to teach 4 different courses in a single semester.
  • Prepare for and attend all class meetings. In case of absence, must make arrangements for an appropriate substitute. Classes should not be cancelled.
  • Provide instruction throughout the semester, develop appropriate material for class sessions, grade assignments in a timely manner, provide students with regular and precise information about their progress in the course, and give students clear information about how to improve their performance in the course.
  • Hold regular office hours for students in the classes taught. A minimum of three posted office hours each week is required. These office hours should be divided over at least two and preferably three different days. Be available for reasonable appointments if a student cannot meet during scheduled office hours.
  • Keep an orderly grade book (using the department software) and clear records of all evaluations of student work in the course. All these materials should be turned in to the department at the close of the semester.
  • Maintain standards of excellence in teaching and in the evaluation of student performance.
  • Adhere to departmental, college and university policies.
Online Lecturer or Course Developer Duties
100% - Online Lecturer Duties:
Teach a specified number of either undergraduate or graduate courses per semester.
  • Prepare for and attend all online “class meetings” if applicable and part of delivery of course.
  • Provide timely feedback and instructor/student interaction in asynchronous online course format with occasions for online office hours and/or Q&A sessions. Regular weekly interaction is expected in online courses.
  • Provide instruction for course(s). Classes are generally in an 8-week or mini-semester format. Class meetings will generally be asynchronous, but instructional expectations match those of the face-to-face experience.
  • Administer assignments, tests, evaluate student work, provide timely feedback to students, and assign grades.
  • Be available for students involved in classes taught. “Office hours” may include a set time where students can contact the instructor, but must also include expectations for timely responses to student inquiries outside of a set contact time.
  • Adhere to departmental, college and university policies.
100% - Online Course Developer Duties:
Build an online course for the unit and/or the College Online Programs.
  • Design the course in accordance with departmental guidance and KU standards, which include working with instructional design staff in the Center for Online and Distance Learning.
  • Work in a collaborative environment, utilizing the expertise of the other major instructors in the program, unit, or center.
  • Complete the course design process within a specific deadline to ensure the course is fully designed and quality reviewed prior to the date the course is to be offered, as determined by the academic department.

Required Qualifications
  1. MA degree (for undergraduate teaching) or PhD degree (for graduate teaching) in Classics, History, or related field.
  2. Demonstrated ability to teach effectively as evidenced by cover letter, teaching history and resume.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Ph.D. degree in Classics, History, or related field.Record of scholarly publication and professional activity.Experience as curator and/or excavation experience.
