Position Summary:

The Center for Adult Transition believes everyone deserves purposeful academic and workforce opportunities in which one feels productive and prospers in their own way. The Center for Adult Transition is within the Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development. The mission of Hudson County Community College’s Center for Adult Transition is consistent with the overall College mission by providing adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities up to the age of twenty-four with the support and resources for the successful transition from secondary school to academic pathways, workforce training, skill development, and/or independent living in service of helping them meet their personal and professional goals. Our overall mission is to inspire those who are developmentally disabled to transition into the HCCC academic community and culture to build relationships that create and illuminate opportunities for the HCCC’s CAT students that advance social equity, environmental stewardship, and economic success into adulthood. The Certified Special Education Teacher candidates need a distinct personality to handle the different kinds of individuals and support groups and maintain a level of professionalism. The candidate must have strong written and verbal communication skills and be well-organized and self-driven to devise and adopt new techniques for teaching and keeping the class orderly. Reporting to the Associate Director, the Center for Adult Transition Certified Special Education will work with many different young adults between the ages of 17-24, with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Certified Special Education Teacher’s essential function is to identify the individual needs of each transitioning adult and create a healthy, inspiring, and supportive learning curriculum and safe environment. In addition, the Certified Special Education Teacher will also coordinate with the Associate Director, Career Advisor, and other CAT Staff to assess individuals as the apply and through the application process to create education plans for the students, discuss the goals and needs of students in their program, and whenever necessary ensure protocols and procedures are adhered to and strictly followed.



Summary of Duties

Advise students on career exploration, career readiness, and career management needs career pathways, and employment opportunities through regular meetings and consistent communication via individual sessions, classroom visits / workshops and virtual services both remotely and in person. to identify and develop business relationships for events, recruitment opportunities, and job placement.Provide academic/career advising to align educational choices with career and goal planning strategies, and achievement of both.Become a subject matter expert on college programs, products, processes, and operations, and remain up to date on industry programs for students.Research careers and local opportunities in depth to support creation of career mapping for students, faculty, and academic departments.Partner with Associate Director to identify and develop business relationships for events, recruitment opportunities, and job placement.Partner with Career Coaches to ensure that training activities and supportive services are occurring for the participants.Provide resources, referrals, and information to assist students in navigating the college.Create and manage, monthly program reports, student progress reports by informing students of their academic progress and providing recommendations to improve.Maintain documentation, data, and reports to monitor student success and retention rates.Partner with Career Coach to design, update, and execute a communication plan consisting of regular communication to inform students of important dates and action steps.Participate in college committees and events, including external networking opportunities, to increase student engagement and partnerships.Collaboratively plan monthly tasks that enhance the student experience with career coaches.Partner with Associate Director to design content and market Center for Adult Transition services via social media, bulletins, classroom presentations, electronic communication, and other forms of advertising.Create and maintain cross-campus relationships to provide referrals and opportunities for engagement.Participate in all aspects of evaluation.Flexibility to work some nights / weekends and on multiple campus sites for classroom activities and events.Perform other related duties as delegated or assigned by leadership.Qualifications

Years of Experience: Three yearsworking in a multicultural, urban environment coordinating workforce activities in higher education and/or a public workforce setting. Associates/Bachelor in any field preferred.TheCenter for Adult Transition is more successful and dynamic when teams come to the table with diverse backgrounds and experiences. Bi-lingual preferred: Spanish / Arabic languages are a priority for the college. Technology Skills: To reach 100% of the student body, the department relies on technology to scale its efforts. We need individuals skilled in database management, spreadsheets, video conferencing (WebEx, ZOOM, Google), email management, word processing (MS Word), and electronic presentations (MS PowerPoint). Active Listening Skills: HCCC supports a diverse and traditionally underserved student body. The Career Advisor will need to recruit, assess, and identify student needs and match students with the appropriate resources. Engagement Skills: Including sales / customer service skills. OVERVIEW:Hudson County Community College serves one of the most ethnically diverse and densely populated communities in the United States. The College is a vibrant, urban institution of higher education whose mission is to provide its diverse communities with inclusive, high-quality educational programs and services that promote student success and upward social and economic mobility.
More than 90% of HCCC’s students receive scholarships, grants, and loans to finance their education, and the College’s extensive financial aid program helps connect students with the resources they need. To date, the College’s Foundation has raised over $3.5 million for student scholarships, and HCCC ranks first in the state of New Jersey for its award of Community College Opportunity Grant funds. About half of its more than 12,000 credit students identify as Hispanic, and more than 33% of all students were born outside of the U.S. In 2021, HCCC had two students selected from a national applicant pool to receive the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship.
Hudson County Community College has three campuses. The largest campus is located at the heart of Jersey City’s Journal Square, which is approximately 20 minutes from New York City. The College has a North Hudson Campus, located in Union City, New Jersey and an additional location at the Hudson County Schools of Technology in Secaucus, New Jersey. The College offers 70 degree and certificate programs and more than 300-day, evening, and weekend courses throughout its three-campus network.
HCCC has two campus Libraries that provide welcoming common spaces that encourage exploration, creation, and collaboration between students, faculty, and a broader community. Our resources include a collection comprised of over 60,000 print and online books, 130 online databases, and approximately 67,000 periodicals (mostly online), nearly 2,000 DVDs, and a number of select streaming videos. In support of our many English Language Learners, our ESL collection offers a rich array of fiction and non-fiction books categorized by reading level to meet a variety of needs. The HCCC Libraries, located on the Journal Square and North Hudson Campuses, support students, faculty research, and curricular needs through a curated collection of print and online resources.
