Job Summary

The Head of Metadata Services and Strategies provides strategic leadership and hands-on expertise for the Cataloging and Metadata Services unit, which focuses on general collections. Reporting to the Director of Collections, Discovery, and Systems, this role is responsible for guiding metadata operations and staff, while actively participating in the creation and maintenance of high-quality metadata for all resources. In a small team environment, the Head will engage directly in metadata work, implement metadata standards and best practices, collaborate on cross-functional projects, provide expertise on emerging trends, and align metadata services with the library's strategic objectives. The Head will champion inclusive practices and promote diversity within metadata services and the broader library community.

Take appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participate in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.

  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and inclusive practices within the unit.
  • Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the unit and in all aspects of metadata services.

Metadata and Systems (40%)

  • Actively create, revise, enrich, and adapt high-quality descriptive, administrative, and technical metadata in MARC and non-MARC formats for physical and electronic resources, including e-serials, e-journals, e-books, databases, datasets, digitized, and born-digital materials at both item and collection levels.
  • Utilize technologies and tools, such as bulk editing, automation techniques, and programmatic methods, to create, remediate, enrich, and transform original and vendor-provided metadata.
  • Evaluate and implement technologies and tools to improve metadata quality and efficiency.
  • Perform authority control and contribute to linked data initiatives.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure metadata supports discovery, access, retrieval, and management of resources across library management systems, discovery platforms, digital repositories, and institutional repositories.
  • Create and manage reports using scripting languages and commercial tools such as Tableau.

Collaboration and Project Management (20%)

  • Lead and participate in cross-functional metadata projects with units within Collections, Discovery, and Systems and other departments both internal and external (e.g., special collections, museums, botanic gardens, and consortial partners).
  • Work collaboratively with metadata and catalog librarians, archivists, programmers, IT staff, and faculty to implement and promote metadata standards and services.
  • Collaborate with other Smith College Libraries departments and teams on metadata creation for digital collections and institutional repository.
  • Represent the library in consortial partnerships and professional committees to advance metadata services and ensure consistency across institutions.

Training and Professional Development (10%)

  • Offer workshops and instruction to library staff, faculty, and students on metadata standards and best practices.
  • Mentor and support the professional growth of the cataloging librarian and other team members.
  • Encourage staff participation in professional development opportunities.
  • Maintain expertise with metadata standards and digital technologies, monitoring trends in metadata services.
  • Advise department staff of key technological developments in the field and participate in national, regional, and local collaborative programs.
  • All employees are expected to participate in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.
