Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Dean of Students.

About the Role

The Dean of Students fosters a culture of inclusion, belonging, and engagement for Hollins University students by applying student development theories and learning outcomes that promote students’ academic, social, and emotional success, thereby increasing student satisfaction and retention. This position reports to the Vice President for Student Success, Well-Being, and Belonging and supervises and provides leadership for the Dean of Students office, Housing and Residence Life (HRL), Student Success Coaches, and the CARE Team process.

The Dean of Students leads the efforts of Student Success, Well-Being, and Belonging division in student crisis management and behavioral assessment including the development of policies, procedures, and protocols to ensure student safety, accountability, and responsiveness to critical needs. This position serves as a point of contact for crisis response involving students and is chair of the CARE team.

The Dean of Students advocates for student concerns/issues and acts as an agent to promote positive institutional change. This role manages departments that provide student learning and development opportunities through student engagement, leadership development, and residential education. Additionally, the Dean of Students administers the policies and regulations of Hollins as they pertain to students, including disciplinary procedures and student grievance and response protocols. This position also creates cross-campus partnerships that foster community, student civility, and social responsibility to build a vibrant intercultural campus climate.

Specific duties include the following:

Administration and Management

  • Direct, manage, and supervise the Dean of Students office and all programs reporting to the office.
  • Establish and implement short- and long-range department goals, objectives, budgets, and operating procedures.
  • Collaborate with the Admission Office to verify enrolled students per semester.
  • Facilitate weekly CARE Team meetings and best practices for student follow-up protocol with a variety of offices.
  • Facilitate the student conduct process ensuring timely investigation and adjudication of reports of alleged student misconduct.
  • In partnership with VP for Student Success, Well-Being, and Belonging and Director of HRL, develop and communicate a student early return move-in schedule.
  • Coordinate the summer housing plan with HRL, Graduate Programs and Continuing Studies, Admission, Special Events, and Facilities.
  • Serve as the back-up on-call staff member for the Director of HRL.
  • Provide leadership and guidance in the analysis, review, creation, and interpretation of student policies and procedures, including annual updates on the undergraduate Student Handbook with a variety of offices.
  • Participate in the hiring, evaluation, and retention of staff members in areas of supervision and make appropriate recommendations to the Vice President for Student Success, Well-Being, and Belonging.
  • Analyze data from records and reports and use results to evaluate and improve department plans, programs, and policies and procedures.
  • Compare year-end accomplishments in all areas against identified goals and objectives.

Student Engagement

  • Serve as the primary advisor to the Student Government Association and attend Senate weekly meetings.
  • Assist with the implementation of New Student Orientation and Family Weekend in collaboration with the Assistant Dean of Students.
  • Edit and publish the undergraduate Student Handbook each year in addition to maintaining changes to the handbook throughout the year.
  • Make presentations about the Student Honor Code and facilitate the signing of the Honor Code each fall.

Collaboration and Bridge-Building

  • Collaborate with Marketing and Communications to coordinate the development of student service publications and promotions.
  • Represent the university to various institutional divisions as well as externally to vendors, students and their families, and the general public.
  • Develop key collaborative relationships with campus administrative areas, faculty, and campus and community leaders to enhance planning and implement strategic initiatives, resolve issues, and respond to crisis incidents.
  • Provide direction and intervention for students in crisis and non-crisis including intervening with campus security and health and counseling staff, providing victim advocacy, and working with staff and students affected by the crisis.
  • Facilitate Decker Award Process with Academic Affairs.
  • Serve as a member of the Sexual Violence Review Committee.
  • Develop strategies for promoting student engagement and learning in collaboration with various on-campus stakeholders.
  • Oversee outreach to diverse student populations to support institutional diversity, inclusion, and belonging goals.
  • Support the goals of the division and university’s mission, vision, and strategic plan.

Position Qualifications

Successful applicants must have the following qualifications and experience:

  • Master’s degree in higher education, student personnel administration, or related field.
  • Minimum of five years of progressive experience in student affairs or student-facing roles in higher education.
  • Effective organizational, communication, interpersonal, customer service, and social media skills.
  • Demonstrated success working with diverse populations.
  • Microsoft Office proficiency.
  • Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Valid United States driver’s license with minimal violations.

Preferred candidates will have experience in a small, private higher education institution.
