Job Title:Faculty – Department of Internal Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine, Fellow to Faculty Primary Care Research (Open Rank/Track)Department:

The Ohio State University College of Medicine and the Wexner Medical Center seek fellows to join the Department of Department of Internal Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine Academic rank and track commensurate with academic record and experience.

Position Overview

This position is part of The Ohio State University’s Provost’s Tenure-Track Fellow to Faculty Program. The Provost’s Tenure-Track Fellow to Faculty Program is a two year fellowship program intended to transition to a Tenure-Track faculty program in the Division of General Internal Medicine (GIM). The program assists early career scholars as they transition from doctoral training to fellowship to tenure track faculty. The fellowship period provides in-depth development of health equity and health services research competencies (see below) and comprehensive mentorship. Provost Fellows will also receive modest career development funding for career development programs that will support their transition to Assistant Professor and their long-term career success.

During the two year fellowship period the successful candidate will focus on research related to topics such as: evidence-based medicine; implementation science; clinical trials in primary care; new models of primary care delivery; minority health and disparities; quality improvement and patient safety; health equity across a breadth of clinical conditions relevant to General Internal Medicine (GIM). Following the fellowship period, which is an Instructor Rank appointment, Provost Fellows who have successfully completed program requirements will transition to the rank of Assistant Professor within the Department of Internal Medicine (DOIM).

Specific role expectations may include, but are not limited to

  • Obtain the knowledge and skills to develop a health equity research program as an independent investigator
  • Earn a master's degree in public health or a related field.
  • Participate in hands-on research projects
  • Present their work at regional and national conferences
  • Collaborating on team applications for grants, conference presentations, and team-produced publications
  • Participation in the academic community of OSU, profession development activities offered by the office of academic affairs (OAA) and regular communication with faculty colleagues and mentors
  • Participation in Division and Department meetings and events

Requirements

  • To be eligible to begin the fellowship, applicants must have successfully completed an Internal Medicine or Med-Peds residency, be board certified or board eligible for internal medicine or internal medicine and pediatrics, have an Ohio medical license or be eligible for licensure in Ohio and/or have completed a PhD program with a Health equity or Health services research focus
  • Committed to completing 2 years of fellowship training with a focus on primary care research.
  • Prior primary care or health services research experience, excellent communication skills, a strong desire to improve primary care through their scholarly work, and a commitment to pursue an academic research career in primary care areas.
  • Have strong interpersonal skills
  • Have robust research agenda that is likely to lead to high impact journals and academic press and /or external funding and demonstrate commitment to inclusion and diversity
  • Enjoy working in a collegial team environment with collaboration relationships across the university.

Department/Division Overview
The Department of Internal Medicine (DOIM) is the largest department at OSUMC. In 2016, the DOIM had 31,000 hospital discharges and 614,000 outpatient encounters. The department has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report in multiple areas. While seven programs at OSUWMC were identified by this report, five of these programs are within internal medicine and are among the best in the country, including cancer, heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes and endocrine disorders and pulmonary and geriatrics

Faculty Defined
Clinical faculty (regardless of rank) - Persons with titles of assistant professor-clinical, associate professor-clinical and professor-clinical. These faculty will have earned a doctor of medicine (MD), doctorate (PhD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field. Clinical faculty members are not eligible for tenure and are appointed for terms of three to five years. They may be reappointed to successive terms. Their principal career focus is the delivery of exemplary clinical care, and may include teaching, and/or research.

Tenure-Track faculty (regardless of rank) - Persons with the titles of assistant professor, associate professor, or professor who are eligible for tenure or who have obtained tenure. These faculty will have earned a doctorate (PhD), Doctor of Medicine (MD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study. Their primary career focus centers on research, service, and teaching. Tenure-track faculty with MD or MD/PhD degrees may also be involved in clinical care.

Research Faculty (regardless of rank) - Persons with the titles of research assistant professor, research associate professor, or research professor. These faculty will have earned a doctorate (PhD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study. Research faculty members are not eligible for tenure and are appointed for terms of one to five years. Their principal career focus is research.

Job Summary: The Physician provides licensed medical care including diagnosis, treatment (inclusive of surgery or pre/post-surgical care where appropriate), case management and clinical research. The Physician manages complex and sometimes unpredictable situations. The Physician must be competent in technical, clinical and surgical skills (where appropriate), cognitive and interpersonal skills required to serve those patients receiving the above mentioned services. The Physician is expected to practice within the established Medical Center and physician’s standards of practice (policies, procedures, protocols), and adhere to key results areas of the Medical Center.

Required Qualifications: Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), board certified or board eligible in specialization required. State of Ohio and DEA licensure required.
