Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The Carolina Center for Public Service (CCPS) engages and supports the faculty, students and staff of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in meeting the needs of North Carolina and beyond. CCPS strengthens the university’s public service commitment by promoting scholarship and service that are responsive to the concerns of the state and contribute to the common good.

Position Summary:

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

The Program Officer for Community Engagement at the Carolina Center for Public Service (CCPS) manages daily operations, planning, and implementation of various CCPS programs for students, faculty, and staff. CCPS, a pan-university center reporting to the Office of the Provost, engages and supports the faculty, students, and staff of UNC-Chapel Hill in meeting the needs of North Carolina and beyond. CCPS strengthens the university’s public service commitment by promoting scholarship and service that are responsive to the concerns of the state and contribute to the common good.

The specific programs for which this position is currently responsible include fellowship and scholarship programs for students, such as Community Service Scholarships and MacDonald and Bryan Fellowships for undergraduate students and Community Engagement Fellowships for graduate students. In addition, this position coordinates aspects of efforts such as disaster response and represents CCPS in various university-wide initiatives related to service and engagement. This position works to ensure that programming reflects university priorities and helps position Carolina as a leader in public service and engagement.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity or comparable background in independent academic or instructional activities, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. This experience may be related to the direction/oversight of programs that focus the academic and research resources of a higher education institution towards community or regional issues.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

*Experience in higher education, human/social services, and/or related field
*Experience with university/community engagement, including teaching, scholarship, and service
*Knowledge and experience in program planning and project management
*Ability to work some evening and weekend hours
*Excellent written and oral communication skills as well as attention to detail
*Demonstrated experience working as an effective team member
*Ability to independently plan, manage, and meet deadlines for multiple projects
*Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of people and organizations and to keep leadership and staff well-informed of project progress and changes
*Knowledge of current practices and trends in community engagement/public service in higher education
*Demonstrated commitment to public service

*Ability to work in person in Chapel Hill. Although this position is eligible for consideration of a hybrid schedule, a minimum of four days a week on site will be required.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

*Experience supervising volunteers or student employees
*Training and/or teaching experience in a higher education
*Master’s degree in higher education, human/social services, or related field

Special Physical/Mental Requirements:

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities:

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
