This dual-focused role requires an in-depth understanding of F-1 and J-1 visa programs, study abroad program development and management, and the associated governmental regulations affecting both inbound international students and outbound study abroad participants. The Advisor is expected to facilitate a supportive and inclusive environment, working collaboratively with relevant offices, faculty, and student groups. Responsibilities include coordinating efforts across campus to address the unique needs of international and study abroad students, such as academic advising, cultural adjustment, legal compliance, pre-departure orientations, and re-entry support. The individual in this position plays a key role in enhancing the global learning experience of students, necessitating a commitment to excellence in service, support, and the ability to engage effectively with a wide range of stakeholders within the academic community.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary advisor for international students on F-1 and J-1 visas and domestic students participating in study abroad programs, providing guidance on immigration issues, program selection, cultural adjustment, academic concerns, and personal development.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of and ensure compliance with U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Department of State regulations affecting F-1 and J-1 visa holders, as well as understanding and advising on visa requirements for study abroad destinations.
  • Manage and promote existing study abroad programs while assisting in the development of new partnerships and programs that enhance global learning opportunities for students.
  • Conduct orientations and workshops for both international students and study abroad participants to facilitate their adjustment to new environments and cultures, including pre-departure sessions and re-entry support for returning students.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and other offices across the college to support the needs of international and study abroad students and contribute to their overall success.
  • Assist students in understanding and applying for financial aid and scholarships for study abroad, ensuring they are aware of all available resources to support their international experiences.
  • Manage and update student records in databases such as Terra Dotta or ViaTRM, ensuring accuracy and compliance with governmental regulations for both inbound and outbound mobility.
  • Provide emergency support and advisement for international and study abroad students as needed.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in International Education, Student Affairs, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in international education, with a strong understanding of F-1 and J-1 visa regulations and study abroad program administration.
  • Familiarity with international student and study abroad database systems (e.g., Terra Dotta, ViaTRM) or willingness to learn.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across various departments and with diverse populations.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • Availability to respond to emergencies outside of regular business hours.
