SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, the Vice Provost assists with all matters of academic administration, policy, planning and campus-wide initiatives at the direction of the Provost. The Vice Provost, along with the Senior Vice Provost, advise the Provost on a number of key academic appointments and appeals processes; faculty development, promotion and tenure, retention; enrollment; and other related issues. Focus is on promoting efforts to support faculty excellence, as the Vice Provost serves as a faculty advocate, playing a leading role in defining, developing, refining and implementing university policies and processes that influence faculty work and well-being, providing guidance for overall success of faculty careers. The Vice Provost works closely with a wide range of University stakeholders and units, including faculty, deans and department heads, the Faculty Senate, Department Head Council, and other leadership teams on campus to sustain and strengthen shared governance.

  • Knowledge of higher education and leadership of the faculty, including national trends in faculty recruitment and development, and best practices in supporting faculty excellence;
  • Ability to think creatively and collaboratively in service of faculty excellence to develop and administer complex projects; and
  • A deep understanding of workload processes within the academy and demonstrated skill in program development

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides leadership, vision, and long- range priorities throughout Academic Affairs to meet the needs of the students, faculty, and staff, upholding high standards and working to promote the strategic goals of the University;
  • Actively contributes to the university's vision of becoming a student-ready university, including collaboration with various departments and stakeholders to assess student needs, developing strategies for improving student support services, and implementing initiatives that enhance the overall student experience; support in offering a welcoming supportive environment for all students, that includes promoting student engagement, retention, success, and career preparedness;
  • Leads the tenure and promotion processes for the Office of the Provost and serves as a resource to the colleges on tenure and promotion issues;
  • Works with the Office of Compliance to develop, review, and revise university policies related to Academic Affairs;
  • Develops best practices for faculty evaluation and faculty development, as well as department head and deans;
  • Advises the Provost on faculty recruitment, retention, grievances, annual evaluations, promotion and tenure;
  • Oversees development and implementation of best teaching practices across all available course modalities;
  • Develops best practices for the recruitment and retention of faculty;
  • Develops, implements and oversees faculty awards, and oversees the programs for University Faculty Emeritus, ACUE, and Investing in US;
  • Oversees the Provost Fellowship Program and other mentoring initiatives, as well as new faculty programming and developing faculty externships;
  • Monitors faculty workload (releases and policy enforcement) as well as small course reporting to advise the Provost regarding efficiencies and improvements to the allocation of faculty time and effort;
  • Serves as liaison to the Faculty Development Grant Committee and Faculty Development Leave Committee.
  • Plays a pivotal role in leading efforts towards achieving Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) status by collaborating with relevant stakeholders, developing strategic initiatives, and implementing programs aimed at meeting criteria for HSI designation;
  • Collaborates with Dean of Students and Office of Student Affairs on issues related to faculty and students; and
  • As needed represents the Office of the Provost on university committees; participates in the appropriate state, regional and national meetings, and organizations for faculty success; and, performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education: Earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degree from an accredited institution of higher education
  • Experience: Two (2) years administrative experience as Assistant Provost or above, or five (5) years administrative experience as a dean or associate dean and five (5) years prior university teaching experience.
  • Rank: Qualifications meriting appointment at the rank of Full Professor (Tenured)

Oversees the Office of the Ombudsman and Office of TRIO Programs.
