The Director of Student Life is responsible for creating, implementing, and assessing a robust student life and co-curricular student experience through campus activities and events, campus-support services, and student leadership development for all students at Arkansas State University–Newport campuses. This position will have direct responsibility and oversight for student life activities, registered student organizations, student engagement, and campus supports such as campus food pantries and health and wellness programs for students. The Director of Student Life reports to the Dean for Students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

·Student Life, Engagement and Well-Being

Facilitate comprehensive student activities and engagement programs intended to enrich the campus experience of students and promote a seamless academic community for all three campuses of Arkansas State University - Newport.

Plan and implement a program of publicity and outreach activities with appropriate timelines prior to events which inform and involve students; Develops master calendar of all campus student activities and events.

Arrange for college representation at conferences and meetings concerning student groups; represent college administration at student government conferences.

Coordinate student events and collaborates as well as co-sponsors activities across campus with other departments to build relationships.

Provides oversight to the campus-wide signature student events and programs such as Welcome Week, Red Ribbon Week, Fall Festival, Christmas Parades, Spring Fling, and other established activities.

Evaluate co-curricular student activities and events which provide a welcoming campus environment and which support student recruitment, retention, and the successful achievement of academic goals.

Provide student engagement support to students enrolled in academic programs at ASU-Newport. Student engagement support includes but is not limited to the following programs: I.G.N.I.T.E, Career and Technical Education, and Transfer Degrees.

Manage the TimelyCare Health and Well-Being platform to promote high-quality student life experiences and holistic well-being. Work in collaboration with marketing to disseminate health care and mental health awareness information to students via multi-modal technology (email, social media, and campus tv’s)

Oversee campus food pantry operation for each campus in collaboration with campus contact. Tasks include food purchase, pickup, distribution to each campus and marketing food pantry support to campus students and employees.

·Registered Student Organizations

Serve as advisor for the Student Government Association, Phi Theta Kappa, and other Registered Student Organizations, etc. Provide oversight for all registered student organizations, advisors, leaders, members and encourages development of new registered student organizations.

Implement and facilitate educational and developmental workshops that foster student leadership and professionalism. Including training through a variety of efforts such as leadership retreats, attendance at student leadership conferences, and cross-cultural programs.

Collaborate with SGA and faculty to develop a robust selection of student clubs and organizations that focus on supporting the needs and interests of all students. Establish regularly scheduled meeting times for the Student Government Association.

Oversee the recruitment and supervision of Student Ambassadors at each ASUN campus and ensure appropriate training; provide technical expertise and input concerning student activities.

·Academic/Student Affairs

Serves on standing ad hoc committees, advisory boards, hiring committees, other college committees, or as a student organization advisor. Attend local, regional, state, or national meetings where required or necessary for the division.

Attends commencement or other ceremonies. Attend departmental, area, divisional, and college-wide meetings where appropriate or as required by the supervisor.


Assists Dean for Students with special projects and perform other related duties as required or assigned.

Campus Location

Work location is main campus at ASU-Newport; with visits to Jonesboro and Marked Tree Campuses as needed for related student activities or events when warranted for planning and implementation of activities.

MINUMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
A minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required, Master’s degree preferred. Four or more years of experience in student activities, leadership development, student engagement area is preferred; Related experience in higher education or equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR FUNDS, PROPERTY and EQUIPMENT

In collaboration with the Dean for students, manages the student life budget associated with the Student Activity Fee. Shares responsibility for the maintenance and upkeep of property and equipment utilized for student activities.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
1-2 student workers as needed.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills; Ability to write reports, correspondence, and policy/procedure manuals so others will understand; Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, faculty, administration, or the general public. The ability to speak clearly so others can understand your instruction.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to prepare and interpret bar graphs.

CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of known variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram formats.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Under general direction of Dean for Students, working from policies and general directives. Rarely refers specific cases to supervisor unless clarification or interpretation of the organization's policy is required.

PLANNING
Considerable responsibility with regard to general assignments in planning time, method, manner, and/or sequence of performance of own work, in addition, the work operations of a group of students.

DECISION MAKING
Performs work operations which permit frequent opportunity for decision-making of minor importance and also frequent opportunity for decision-making of major importance, either of which would affect the work operations of small organizational component and the organization's customers.
