Pipe Shop Supervisor

- Provides direct supervision of Pipe Shop, includes and plumbers/steamfitters.
- Repair and maintenance of campus boilers and auxiliary equipment. Troubleshooting campus HVAC equipment, including all steam heat exchangers. Plans, organizes, assigns and coordinates the maintenance work and installation services.
- Directs the maintenance and repair, including emergency repairs, of the various campus-wide distribution systems including steam, potable water, natural gas, condensate return, chilled water, sanitary and storm water. Decides whether work can be done by “in-house” personnel or due to the extent of the work, a contractor needs to be brought in. Supervises these contractors in the performance of their duties.
- Schedules repair work and projects from works initiated by area maintenance supervisors and related faculty and staff personnel.
- Establishes preventive maintenance schedules for campus-wide specialty equipment such as condensate pumps, domestic hot water circulators and heating hot water circulators. Establishes and recommends standard safety and operational practices and procedures.
- Assigns daily work assignments to Steamfitters/ Plumbers. Inspects and approves all completed work of Steamfitters/Plumbers for compliance with requirements or work order and adherence to trade standards and codes.
- Estimates man-hours, materials and supplies required for projects relating to plumbing, piping, and associated equipment requested by faculty and staff. Determines whether a project can be done by in-house personnel or whether it should be done by a contractor. Provides review and input on new construction and projects.
- Maintains records of materials, tools and supplies received, used and held in stock, inventories materials on hand and tools in use. Protects University property from pilferage, abuse and/or misuse.
- Inspects completed job assignments for adherence to trade standards and contract specifications.
Qualifications and Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Eight years progressively responsible experience in the trade(s) where assigned to include at least five years in a lead or supervisory capacity.
- Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
Certification Requirements: Journeyman Plumber license with the ability to earn their Master Plumber certification within one year of employment.
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: Possesses a practical working knowledge of electro-mechanical devices, hydraulics and mechanics as related to the types of equipment and systems which are in the buildings under his supervision. Skill in repairing and servicing HVAC equipment and systems. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, drawings, specifications, and construction documents; to read and understand manufacturer's recommendations regarding scheduled and preventive maintenance, servicing, and operation; to use computers and related software to diagnose HVAC system problems; to prepare reports; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; to work at heights up to 35 feet; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools and supplies and/or exert force up to 50 lbs.; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on machinery or equipment; to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather or temperature conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.Organization: Operations
