Description

The MGH Institute of Health Professions (“Institute”) seeks a full-time faculty member to serve within its School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and Department of PA Studies. The faculty position will be appointed at a rank commensurate with the candidate’s education, experience, and record of accomplishment. The Institute is a graduate school born out of world-class hospitals that was founded in 1977 by Massachusetts General Hospital, and it is the only degree-granting affiliate of the Mass General Brigham. 

The primary duties and responsibilities of the role include teaching, student advisement, institutional and professional service, and scholarship. Related to the role of principal faculty within the PA program, the faculty member will actively participate in the following:

Defining and periodically updating the program’s mission, goals, learning outcomes and graduate competencies, Selecting applicants for admission to the PA program, Providing student instruction and mentorship, Conducting assessments and evaluations of student performance,Serving as a role model to student, modeling integrity, reflection, critical thinking, inclusion, collaboration, and empathy, Offering academic counseling and advisement to students, Designing and delivering remedial instruction, if necessary,  Developing, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating the PA program, including its admissions processes, curriculum, and program effectiveness.

DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES

The faculty member will work collaboratively with the Department Chair and Program Director each year to develop a work plan, which includes defined effort across responsibilities and goals related to career development. Areas within the work plan and effort assignments generally include:

  • Teaching: Teaches in entry-level and post-professional programs as appropriate to area of expertise and program needs. 
  • Service: Serves on Department, School, and Institute Committees; participates in regional, national, or professional activities; advises students. 
  • Scholarship: Participates in research and scholarship activities commensurate with level of appointment.
  • Administration (if applicable): May serve in a program administrative role supporting a focused area (e.g., preclinical education, clinical education, admissions, etc.) 

Note:  Specific responsibilities may be subject to change based on the needs of the Department or Program. The Institute provides faculty members with the opportunity to engage in limited outside work, following institutional policies and with the approval of a supervisor, for activities such as clinical care.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Will work as a faculty member and assume all such responsibilities in being an active and contributing member to the department.
  • Will need to be need to flexible with schedule, able to prioritize, able to self-monitor, able to work collaboratively with others (including in interprofessional teams), and able to track progress of multiple projects.


Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Earned terminal academic degree for discipline* (e.g., master’s degree for PA, NP; MD, DO, MBBS for physician; PharmD)
  •  Experience in PA/medical education, clinical supervision, and/or student mentorship.
  •  Licensed or eligible for licensure to practice in Massachusetts**
  • Minimum four years of clinical experience
  • Record of scholarship and service commensurate with academic rank

*An earned doctorate relevant to higher education or healthcare (e.g., PhD, EdD, DrPH, DHSc, etc.) is preferred but not required.

**National certification (e.g., NCCPA, ABMS) is preferred. Currently licensees should be in good standing with the respective state licensing authority. 

SKILLS / ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge and experience in PA/medical education. 
  • Knowledge of the PA profession and current PA practice. 
  • Record of service to their discipline and/or higher education.
  • Proficiency in educational technologies used in PA education. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of an interprofessional collaborative team. 
  • Ability to interact effectively and ethically with students, faculty, staff, preceptors, and administration.
  • Ability to produce and disseminate research and scholarship. 
  • Commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity in higher education.

About MGH Institute of Health Professions

MGH Institute of Health Professions is a graduate school in Boston that provides entry-level and post-professional programs in Nursing, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Genetic Counseling, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Physician Assistant Studies.
