Duties

The Museum Specialist assists supervisors with research, collections development (including acquisitions, documentation, and management), exhibition development, and public service. Work assignments may require duty locations either at the NMAAHC's offices on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., or the Smithsonian's Pennsy Collections and Support Center in Landover, Maryland.

In this position, you will:
Conduct research on topics, themes, and objects within Smithsonian. Collaborate with collections management and curatorial staff in the long-term development of the NMAAHC's collection and the information pertaining to it. Support the collection acquisition and loan processes by preparing justifications, researching some potential acquisitions, communicating with vendors, assisting with processing acquisitions paperwork and monitoring all phases of payment processing. Respond to inquiries regarding collections from the general public. Write materials for object labels, the museum's website, interactive educational devices, and acquisition documentation as determined by curatorial supervisors.

Qualifications

Basic Qualification: Experience that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Experience related to the operation or management of a museum or similar collection of valuable objects. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include collections management, registration, cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, or conservation of collections of museum material, or other experience related to the position to be filled. Most positions require a particular subject-matter specialization, e.g., aeronautics, anthropology, art, geology, history, natural science, technology, biology, or zoology.

In addition to the basic qualification requirement above:

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience cataloguing, accessioning, documenting, and managing a collection; conducting research; providing exhibition development and public services.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Or Education: Two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent degree related to the position may be substituted to meet the experience requirements.
