Summary:

The Child Mind Institute is seeking an Assistant Controller to act as a key member of the Finance team, responsible for supervising the accounting team in performing the work required to maintain the general ledger across three legal entities. Working under the direction of the Controller, the Assistant Controller is responsible for the timely and accurate recording of transactions into the organization's financial system. The Assistant Controller is responsible for day-to-day financial tasks, which include maintaining the integrity of the general ledger data, reviewing processing of payments, bank reconciliations, recording of journal entries, cash receipts, and providing general accounting support. The incumbent is also responsible for preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, as well as coordinating the organization's annual audit. The incumbent should be a highly motivated self-starter who understands the nuances of not-for-profit accounting.

Reporting to the Controller, this is an exempt, full-time, hybrid (2 days in the office) position located in our NYC headquarters office.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and manage the monthly close process
  • Review journal entries and supporting schedules prepared by the accounting team, including for cash/investments, payroll/benefits, receivables, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, AP/accrued expenses, deferred income/refundable advances, contributions/grants, medical practice revenue, and intercompany
  • Prepare financial reports for month-end close (including combined financial statements)
  • Prepare and analyze quarterly budget vs actual reports, in collaboration with FP&A team
  • Analyze current accounting procedures, recommend changes, develop and implement improvements
  • Supervise a team of 3-5 Senior and Staff Accountants
  • Assist Controller with management of 2-3 Accounts Payable Coordinators and supervision of the Accounts Payable process
  • Analyze new contributions/grants to determine proper treatment in accordance with Not-For-Profit GAAP. Review expense allocation methodologies for compliance with Not-For-Profit GAAP.
  • Prepare and maintain the Net Assets with Donor Restrictions release schedule, coordinating with the Sponsored Programs team as needed
  • Serve as a point of contact with external auditors. Coordinate and/or prepare information and schedules for annual financial and uniform guidance audits and tax returns (Forms 990 and 1120)
  • Keep up-to-date on new accounting standards, changing regulations, and best practices
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the agency policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, planning, assigning, directing work, rewarding, coaching, performance reviews, and addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field
  • 10+ years' professional accounting experience (public accounting experience desirable)
  • 2+ years' team management experience
  • Strong understanding of Not-For-Profit Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • 6+ years' not-for-profit accounting experience required (public and/or private)
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to prioritize and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong analytical and technical skills required, including independently researching new/complex accounting areas
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including advanced Excel skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CPA license highly desirable
  • Advanced degree and/or other certifications desirable
  • Some experience in a healthcare setting desirable
  • Experience with Sage Intacct is a plus
