Job Summary

The Sr Engineer - Substation is responsible for overseeing the design, analysis, and implementation of complex electrical substations. You will lead and manage substation projects, provide technical guidance to a team of engineers, and collaborate with clients and stakeholders to deliver high-quality solutions. What you will do

  • Leads and manages the design, analysis, and implementation of complex electrical substations, ensuring adherence to project requirements, budget, and schedule. Ensure adherence to company or client standards, guidelines, specifications, practices, and procedures in preparing design drawings. Acts as a Subject Matter Expert in a particular area of the discipline.
  • Ensures compliance with industry standards, codes, and regulations in all substation designs and projects.
  • Reviews and approves engineering drawings, specifications, and technical reports for substation projects, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with relevant codes and standards. Oversee the preparation and review of construction documents, bills of materials, and construction specifications.
  • Prepares and review detailed engineering calculations including grounding, Alternating Current (AC) loading, Direct Current (DC) loading, bus sizing, cable sizing, etc. following standard methods and principles to ensure the integrity and reliability of substation designs.
  • Evaluates and selects substation equipment and materials, considering technical specifications, cost, performance, and project requirements.
  • Prepares and issues requests for material or services to potential suppliers. Evaluate proposals and make recommendations for supplier selection based on quality, cost, and delivery considerations.
  • Conducts site visits and inspections to assess existing substation conditions, troubleshoot issues, and propose efficient solutions.
  • Oversees external consultants, vendors, and contractors to ensure the successful execution of substation design projects.
  • Collaborates with clients, project managers, and multidisciplinary teams to establish project objectives, scope, and deliverables to improve substation performance and reliability. Manage project planning, scheduling, and cost estimation.
  • Prepares and review technical reports, proposals, and cost estimates for substation projects, outlining the scope, timeline, and resources required.
  • Develops, implements, and maintain standardized design practices, procedures, standards, specifications, guidelines, and template drawings.
  • Conducts incident investigations and root cause analyses for equipment failures or incidents, identifying underlying issues, recommending corrective actions and preventive measures to prevent recurrence. Acts as a Subject Matter Expert in a particular area of the discipline.
  • Stays updated with the latest developments and advancements in engineering practices, emerging technologies, and industry trends.
  • Provides technical expertise and guidance to a team of engineers and designers, mentoring and supporting their professional development.
  • Engages in other duties as needed that support Alliant Energy's Values and helps deliver on our Purpose to serve customers and build stronger communities.

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree within an engineering program that is accredited through the Engineering Accreditation Commission Required

Required Experience

  • 7 years of related experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Project management leadership experience preferred, along with ability to deal with subcontractors and cross-functional teams; may have expertise in a particular area of the discipline.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to use computer software programs (e.g., e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet, and project management).
  • Ability to work in a diverse work environment.
