The Central Iowa VA Health Care System is recruiting for a full time Gastroenterologist staff position located in Des Moines IA. This position will
fall under the Specialty Medicine Service line.



Duties

The VA Midwest Health Care Network advocates for a Whole Health System of care in each of the Medical Centers. This is an approach to healthcare that empowers and equips people to take charge of their health and well-being and live their lives to the fullest. As an employee operating in a Whole Health System of care, you will operate in a model with three core elements, seeking to create a personalized health plan for each Veteran. This is done in the context of healing relationships and healing environments and a connection back to the Veteran's community. This aligns with the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Mission Statement to Honor America's Veterans by providing exceptional health care that improves their health and well-being.

Position may entail other duties as assigned.

  • Physician will provide Electronic Consultation services (E-Consults) and reviews consults for determination if appropriate for Care in the Community of local VA services.
  • Work hours to be determined by the Physician and must be tracked using the VA tracking process.
  • All physicians need to follow departmental and VHA policies for leave and attendance and will work within Title 38 appointment guidelines. Currently VHA guidelines do not permit comp time or overtime pay for physicians. However, physicians who are asked to work outside their normal assigned tour of duty may request administrative leave for rest and relaxation.
  • Documentation is necessary in all areas in accordance with departmental policy. All administrative work should be completed in a timely fashion.
  • Quality of care should be able to meet professional standards at all times.
  • All physicians will work within their privileges at all times, unless necessitated by an emergency.
  • The key duties of the job include outpatient and inpatient GI consultation, inpatient and outpatient procedures, some administrative efforts and oversight of Advanced Practice providers in the clinic.
  • Additional duties outside the referral coordination include diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with a wide range of gastrointestinal diseases according to evidenced based methods and techniques. The ideal candidate should be proficient at routine GI procedures such as: colonoscopy, EGD and capsule endoscopy, and its associated interventions.
  • Sustain collaborative working relationships with other staff, assist in resolving conflicts, and contribute to the accomplishment of VISN and Medical Center strategic goals and performance measures.
  • Works effectively within a team environment contributing to the effectiveness of the team to deliver safe, cost effective, quality, timely, and patient-focused care.
  • Actively demonstrates the ability to understand the complexity of an integrated medical care delivery system and how change affects the system as a whole evidenced by exhibited knowledge of actions impacting performance measures, wait times, patient satisfaction, and improving access to care.
  • Demonstrates ability to manage multiple task/priorities, and productively contributes to the health care delivery team.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work at all levels of the organization to achieve organizational goals such as reducing length of stay, improving care coordination, reduce number of ambulance deflections and improving patient care outcomes.
  • Demonstrates the ability to recognize personal strengths and limitations by participating in professional and personal learning opportunities sponsored by the employer.
  • Comply with CPRS Computer Security and Privacy Act Statements. All physicians must complete all annual required training as determined by VHA or Medical Center Policy. All providers are to adhere to OPM (Office of Personnel Management), VHA, Medical Staff By-Laws, and VHA/Medical Center policies and regulations.
Recruitment Incentive (Sign-on Bonus): Authorized
Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases
Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of annual paid time offer per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME)
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA
Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)
Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory
CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement
Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided
Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting
Work Schedule: The tour of duty for this position is typically Monday- Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm. Additional information may be provided during the interview process.
