This position is located at the VA Black Hills Health Care System in Hot Springs, South Dakota. The Optometrists for Specialty Services will examine, diagnose, treat and manage various conditions of the visual system and associated structures including diseases, injuries and disorders. The incumbent works as a member of a multi-disciplinary health care team, collaborating with other members of the team to provide medical care to Veterans.
Duties
The VA Midwest Health Care Network advocates for a Whole Health System of care in each of the Medical Centers. This is an approach to healthcare that empowers and equips people to take charge of their health and well-being and live their lives to the fullest. This position is located at the VA Black Hills Health Care System in Hot Springs, South Dakota. The Optometrists for Specialty Services will examine, diagnose, treat and manage various conditions of the visual system and associated structures including diseases, injuries and disorders. The incumbent works as a member of a multi-disciplinary health care team, collaborating with other members of the team to provide medical care to Veterans. Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Providing comprehensive assessment, diagnostic work-up and clinic intervention, including comprehensive patient assessment, health history, physical examination and patient education to Veterans;
- Integrating eye care services with other professionals;
- Ordering and evaluating diagnostic tests as appropriate, recommending treatment and/or referral;
- Working closely with both Optometry and Ophthalmology to provide eye care to Veterans;
- Interpreting diseases and conditions of the eye and adnexa and ocular manifestations of systemic disease;
- Conducting routine eye exams, prescribing glasses and also managing various ocular conditions prevalent in a hospital-based eye clinic including diabetes, macular degeneration and glaucoma;
- Ordering, verifying, dispensing and adjustment of optical aids for visually impaired patients.
- Verifying, dispensing, and adjustment of spectacle lenses
- Participate in the educational programs for surgical personnel as well as other members of the medical staff
- Participate in monitoring the quality, safety and appropriateness of patient care
- Participate in developing and updating policies and procedures specific to general surgery
- Demonstrate ethical conduct and serve as a positive role model to others at all levels of the organization
- Participate in quality assurance programs and chart reviews.
- Attend Surgical Services staff meetings - Complete medical records in accordance with Bylaws and Rules and Regulations of the Medical Staff
- Participate in Medical Staff committee assignments as determined by the Chief of Surgery
- Perform other duties assigned by the Chief of Surgery
Recruitment Incentive (Sign-on Bonus): Available
Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases
Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME)
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA
Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory
CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full-time with board certification)
Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided
Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday: 7:30 - 4:00
