Duties

**This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until September 30th, 2024. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be December 20th, 2023, with subsequent cut-off dates every 2 weeks. Eligible applications received after that date will be accepted on an ongoing basis and qualified candidates will be considered as vacancies become available.**

Work Schedule: 8:00am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday.
Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases
Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME)

The Associate Director supervises staff assigned to the Clinical Programs Section and has responsibility for oversight of clinical projects initiated by GRECC clinical staff. With regard to clinical responsibilities as a physician providing care in geriatrics through GRECC programs, the incumbent takes responsibility for providing geriatric care to eligible Veterans in the GRECC outpatient clinics including the primary care geriatrics clinics, the consultation clinic.

The incumbent will be responsible for providing and overseeing the evaluation and management of patients in the outpatient geriatrics clinics and for providing consultation through face-to-face clinics, telehealth clinics, and E-consults. The incumbent will provide extensive expertise in the treatment of conditions occurring in older patients, including, but not limited to, (a) medical illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes, coronary artery disease, chronic renal insufficiency, and others; (b) medical management of conditions commonly occurring in older adults including, but not limited to, lower urinary tract symptoms, osteoarthritis, and polypharmacy; (c) geriatric syndromes that are often multifactorial in etiology such as cognitive impairment and dementia; gait instability, urinary incontinence, functional decline, and mood disorders.

The major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for providing teaching and supervision to fellows, residents, medical students, and other allied health trainees in clinical settings.
  • Supports the primary responsibility of GRECC clinical activities which is to apply new knowledge and ideas, evaluate their usefulness in a patient care setting, and demonstrate their practicality for exporting throughout the VA system.
  • Recruitment and retention of staff, ensuring efficient operations of the geriatrics clinical programs sponsored by GRECC in accordance with Criteria and Standards for GRECCs
  • Participates in other clinical activities as appropriate to the needs of the medical center and as compatible with the overall time demands of the position.
