The Department of Community Development and Planning seeks a Sustainability Planner to join the Sustainability Team, who provides planning analysis of environmental and climate issues in Watertown and communicates with the public and stakeholders about sustainability concepts.

This senior planner position will assist with a range of efforts in service of implementing the resilient Watertown climate and energy plan, and other related plans, to mitigate our community’s greenhouse gas emissions and improve community resilience to climate change impacts. This position reports to the Sustainability Manager and works as part of an interdepartmental team on a wide variety of climate change topics.

Minimum qualifications: bachelor’s degree in environmental studies, urban planning, or
relevant field of study plus at least four years of professional experience; master’s degree in planning preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable. Strong oral communication and interpersonal skills to present information to the public as well as boards, committees, and elected/appointed officials. AICP certification or AICP-candidate designation preferred.

Salary and hours: This is a union position with a starting salary of $76,095 annually. Hiring above Step 1 is dependent on qualifications and experience.

The work week is 37.5 hours (Monday, Wednesday and Thursday: 8:30-5 p.m.; Tuesdays: 8:30-7 p.m.; Fridays 8:30 to 12:30 p.m.). This position is eligible for flexible work hours and one day of remote work.

Benefits: health insurance (80% employer paid) through the Group Insurance Commission (GIC), dental/vision coverage, three weeks’ paid vacation, personal and sick time, pension plan enrollment, flexible spending account, and deferred compensation plans.
