Summer 2025 Veterinary Technician Internship

The veterinary technician intern position is open to credentialed veterinary technicians or post graduate students of AVMA accredited veterinary technology programs. This position is intended to help participants gain the skills necessary to work as a technician in the field of zoologic animal medicine. The veterinary technician internship will provide extensive hands-on training, from a diverse veterinary team, on a wide variety of exotic species.
Interns will be working in the 23,677-square-foot state-of-the-art, HCA Veterinary Center located at the Nashville Zoo. The LEED Silver Certified hospital opened in 2019 contains public facing exam room, surgical suite, and nursery. Additionally, it contains a radiology room, in-house laboratory, pack/prep room and quarantine enclosures. It has equipment for basic and advanced anesthetic monitoring and diagnostic techniques, including rigid and flexible endoscopy, digital radiography, small and large animal ventilators, and ultrasonography.
Interns are scheduled to work 40 hours per week and each internship runs for a minimum of 8 weeks with the option to extend if available (open to some negotiation). This is an unpaid opportunity; housing can be provided on zoo grounds.
Skills and Duties:
- Preventative, diagnostic, and surgical immobilizations: set up, take down, ultrasound, radiology, collecting samples, and giving treatments.
- Anesthetic monitoring
- Lab work: blood work, fecal exams, cytology, urinalysis, and outside lab preparation
- Postmortem exams
- Hospital maintenance: cleaning, equipment servicing and maintenance, stocking, and inventory
- Medical records: filing, entering data, and organizing.
Requirements:
- Ability to stand for long periods of time.
- Must be able to walk, bend, kneel and crawl.
- Able to lift and carry 50 pounds without difficulty.
- Ability to traverse and work on zoo grounds in all weather conditions.
- Interact with public while maintaining professional standards.
