SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
The After School Program Assistant (ASPA), under the direction of the Youth Program Director, assists in the planning and delivery of elementary and middle school student programs designed for Drake House residents. These programs include both after-school programs and full-day programs during school closings. As a key member of the Student Programs team, the ASPA ensures programs effectively bridge the gap between school and home and meet the social, physical, academic, and emotional needs of the students on our campus. The ASPA also partners with assigned volunteers to deliver classroom learning and outdoor activity instruction.
Primary job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
With Youth Programs Team, develop and implement student programming that is fun and engaging, as well as developmentally appropriate in the areas of character development, fitness and recreation, academics and enrichment activities Engage and work with volunteers to meet students’ needs in increasing academic skills, social skills, and physical development. Provide focus on academic learning through homework assignments and supplemental learning tools Work with volunteers to plan and deliver exposure to a variety of extracurricular experiences that provide enrichment in art, music, etc. (concerts, plays, art displays, etc.) Ensure student programs are engaging to students by combining fun with an educational environment Engage with parents to support children’s academic achievement and informal learning Assist in the planning and deployment of volunteer groups involved in student programs Assist in the assignment of volunteers based on students’ needs and volunteer’s skill level. Communicate clearly with parents regarding child injuries or behavioral challenges Maintain cleanliness in all program areas Research and stay up-to-date on student learning trends for elementary and middle school age groups Attends TDH Staff meetings, Program meetings, and events as requested Other duties and responsibilities, as assigned.QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS
Genuine love for working with children Knowledge and understanding of child development and behavior management Must display an enthusiastic passion for the Drake House mission Must be service-minded, demonstrate a genuine concern and empathy for the needs of others Must be knowledgeable on and dedicated to the challenges of homelessness Must be energetic, active and enjoy outdoor activities Must demonstrate compassion and patience when dealing with school-age children Relational skills to effectively interact with parents and volunteers Ability to correct and instruct students in a respectful and caring manner that will promote social emotional learning and build strong character Must be reliable and responsible with strong safety consciousness Ability to work both individually and on teams Self-starter with ability to organize, establish priorities, and manage multiple assignments Must display effective time management skills Must be able to work in fast-paced environment and display flexibility and adaptability as priorities shift Must have GA driver’s license and reliable transportation to and from program site Must have basic computer skills
