As Senior Counsel, Litigation Management you will have broad responsibility for defending the Company’s legal interests and promoting the company's commitment to legal compliance and business ethics. You will represent the company and provide support in all subject matter areas, as well as participate in cross-functional projects and initiatives. You will lead or assist on proactively managing and mitigating risk across the organization.

Skills & Responsibilities:

  • Managing and directing outside litigation counsel in an efficient, effective manner in order to reduce litigation costs
  • Proactively oversee and manage a variety of legal matters and claims that arise, through investigation to resolution
  • Advise Director of Claims on settlement and other strategies
  • Managing complex and diverse litigation involving auto liability and workers compensation claims, commercial and government contracts, product liability, vendor, customer and distributor disputes, real estate, intellectual property, environmental, insurance coverage, antitrust, unfair trade practices, false advertising, personal injury and property damage claims
  • Responding to demands, threatened claims, subpoenas, requests for information from government agencies, investigators and other third parties
  • Engaging in early intervention and dispute resolution and defense strategy to resolve threatened claims
  • Providing advice and counsel on a day-to-day basis regarding disputes and litigation
  • Negotiating settlements in appropriate cases; overseeing alternative dispute resolution
  • Providing practical, business-oriented legal advice to other legal team members and directly to internal clients
  • Advising business leaders on strategies and tactics in a way that advances the company's business while addressing legal risks and protecting the company's integrity and reputation
  • Coordinate and prepare litigation reports and updates to senior management as required
  • Performing fact investigation, conducting legal research, issuing/managing litigation holds and discovery management
  • Proactively identifying and evaluating legal and business risks to the company
  • Efficiently managing outside counsel’s tactical guidance, staffing, case management, budgeting, and alignment with the Company’s broader legal strategy
  • Participating in cross-functional projects and initiatives
  • Implementing the company’s Records Retention Program
  • Working pro-actively across multiple business units, establishing and maintaining effective relationships with key members of management and staff, and serving as a liaison between the businesses and outside counsel
  • Updating the legal department regarding legal developments in areas of interest to the company including e-discovery, social media, class actions, etc.
  • Assisting with the development and implementation of legal and risk strategy, as appropriate and support risk management department in evaluating material claims settlement strategy
  • Perform other tasks as assigned from time to time by the General Counsel
  • Occasional domestic and international travel

Job Requirements Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Competence as a lawyer; ability to manage heavy and complex workload in a high-pressure environment.
  • Good communication (oral and written), organizational and interpersonal skills within and across departments and externally; must be proactive in providing counsel to clients
  • Sound judgment with the ability to clearly make reasoned recommendations; ability to cross think and determine who should be kept informed
  • Self-starter with good business sense and a sense of urgency, honesty, and fairness
  • Good team player, calm under pressure
  • Self-confident and inspires confidence from clients

Required Education & Experience:

  • Must have a JD degree from an accredited law school.
  • Must have a minimum of eight years in litigation and/or litigation management
  • Prefer candidate with experience in handling auto liability, personal injury and government enforcement among others
  • Committed to be a legal business partner to internal clients
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent analytical skills, as well as impeccable attention to detail, strong sense of ownership and accountability
  • Strategic thinker and ability to work independently with minimal supervision
