We are seeking a highly motivated laboratory-based scientist with a strong background in behavioral pharmacology to join the Lilly Pain and Neuronal Health Drug Discovery team.  The ideal candidate will be a critical thinker, experienced in animal handling, dosing, animal surgery and demonstrated expertise in behavioral pharmacology. The candidate will be an integral part of multiple teams focused on developing novel medicines across broad pain disorders. Therefore, the ability to interact collaboratively with scientists with diverse expertise is a prerequisite for this role.  

Responsibilities:

The primary responsibilities of the candidate will be to support multiple in vivo animal studies in the Pain and Neuronal Health group.

  • Design and conduct of rodent (mouse and rat) in vivo pharmacology studies
  • Randomizing, blinding, formulating, and dosing of test compounds to study animals via diverse route of administrations including PO, SC, IM, IV, IP
  • Collecting behavioral data of various modalities via manual observation or automated AI systems
  • Accurately documenting clinical observations, dosing times, dosing volume, bleeding times, body weights, food consumption and unscheduled events
  • Collecting and handling fluid and tissue samples (plasma, CSF, DRG, other tissues) at study termination
  • Processing, labeling, and delivering samples for analysis internally and externally
  • Analyzing, graphically representing data and statistically analyzing data
  • Recording data in notebook, presenting in laboratory and project team meetings
  • Demonstrates aseptic procedures
  • Prepares animals for surgery, monitors animals for pain during and post-surgery and administers proper anesthetic
  • Conducts various surgical models, can perform technical administrations such as intravenous, intrathecal and epidural in rodents
  • Demonstrates command of dissection and prosection of rodents
  • Coordinates all preparations for the conduct of necropsies and demonstrates proficient dissection techniques
  • Delivers high-quality tissue samples
  • Demonstrates exceptional ability to work with fellow lab/team members in order to schedule, coordinate, and execute high-quality in vivo studies
  • Displays problem-solving skills and the knowledge of inter- and intra-departmental roles and responsibilities for coordination of work activities
  • Analyze and interpret experimental data using statistical methods, author scientific reports, and present data to multidisciplinary teams
  • Displays innovative skills to accommodate various study designs
  • Ensures full compliance with all Lilly regulations, including understanding and following all Animal Care and Use protocols

    Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors/Master’s Degree in Biology or related field with relevant animal handling/dosing experience.

    Additional Skills/Preferences:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in dosing and handling mice and rats.
Experience with in vivo pharmacology studies, preferably rodent pain models.Experience designing and conducting in vivo imaging studies in rodents.Demonstrated proficiency in difficult routes of administration in rodents (intrathecal, epidural, intra-articular)Skilled in the following sample collections: plasma, brain, spinal cord, dorsal root ganglionAbility to work collaboratively in a team environmentFlexibility and adaptability to a changing work environment with changing priorities.Strong organizational, multi-tasking, and time-management skills.Computer skills including a working knowledge of MS-Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint is required)Proficiency in graphing software GraphPad, SigmaPlot or similar.1+ years industry experienceSkilled in small animal surgical techniquesExcellent written and oral communication skills, ability to document experiments clearly and according to Good Research Practice principles.Interest / aptitude in data analysis, image analysis, coding and machine learning
