Summary

As a Supervisory Safety and Occupational Health Specialist, you will be responsible for planning, directing, developing, evaluating, validating, and improving facility safety and health, and programs for all Federally owned and leased buildings within the NCR.

Location of position: OSH Section, Environment and Fire Protection Branch, Facilities Management and Service Programs Division, Washington D.C.

We are currently filling one vacancy, but additional vacancies may be filled as needed.



Duties

  • Plans, manages, and directs facility safety OSH Programs within the NCR area of geographic responsibility which are designed to ensure incorporation of efficient and effective program provisions for GSA controlled facilities, and GSA employees. Establishes and maintains a viable facility safety program for the protection of the Federal workforce and visitors within GSA-owned and leased buildings, vehicles, and alternate worksites against injuries or illnesses resulting from unsafe work conditions, processes, practices, or the use of hazardous agents.
  • Establishes plans and procedures for monitoring the occupational safety and health program administered by GSA Service Center Managers, NCR PBS Division Directors and other GSA Services. Applies a thorough knowledge of OSH, Facility Safety, industrial hygiene, and environmental policies, practices, and principles. Provides consultation and assistance to all levels of line and staff management. Develops and applies a systematic approach to identifying and solving OSH problems through inspections and medical monitoring, encouraging employee participation in loss control methods such as awareness of hazards associated with warehousing, chemical handling/storage, vehicle operations, Child Care Center Facility Safety, and hazard identification and abatement.
  • Utilizes GSA personnel and contract services, schedules surveys of Federally owned and controlled building and GSA worksites to assess for OSH and environmental hazards including adequacy of ventilation, condition of electrical system, walking and working surfaces, protective devices, noise levels, exposure to mechanical parts, lighting, work station design, and IAQ indicators.
  • Evaluates safety and environmental conditions identified during surveys and assessments, and recommends appropriate action based on feasibility, cost, disruption of Federal agencies and program priorities. Attends and participates in meetings of union and management committees for the purpose of providing interface between employees and management concerning matters of OSH and environmental issues and for evaluating suggestions for improving facility safety and environmental programs. Compiles, analyzes, and interprets tracking systems data and renders technical reports concerning program improvements, status of corrective actions, and methods or program improvements to reduce employee lost-time rates.
