Description
The Assistant Professor of Music/Director University Bands provides a balance of musical artistry and teaching. Identifies and develops creative learning processes for students, mentors them through these steps using a variety of methods and helps with student learning outcomes. Engages students with a variety of diverse rehearsal techniques. Proficient at rehearsal pacing designed to stimulate student interaction with the music and movement. The Director of University Bands reports to the Department of Music Chair.
The responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
1. Maintain and grow the marching band program
2. Maintain and grow the concert band (spring semester)
3. Develop a chamber ensemble
5. Recruit, direct, promote and maintain all aspects of the program
6. Teach duties: conducting, music education courses involving instrumental music methods
7. Community outreach to foster relationships/recruit from high schools
8. Builds and maintains professional relationships with area band directors
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Earned doctorate (DMA or PhD) or ABD status in Music, Music Education, or a related field Demonstrated excellence in collegiate-level teaching and conducting
Significant experience leading and managing a university band program
Strong background in music theory, history, and performance
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous experience as a university band director
Evidence of an active research agenda and scholarly productivity
Familiarity with music technology and music software
Ability to teach a secondary instrument or voice
Licenses or Certificates:
None required.
Additional Requirements:
A background and/or credit check will be required of the successful applicant. In addition to submitting a cover letter, candidates must submit a current resume. Candidates must have a high school transcript, or an unofficial college transcript submitted to HR. An official transcript (if applicable) and names, addresses and phone numbers of three (3) references will be required of the successful applicant.
Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee may regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Environmental Conditions: Working conditions - Work is normally performed in a typical interior work environment that does not subject the employee to any unpleasant elements.
Physical Effort – The position is physically comfortable; the individual has discretion about walking, standing, etc.
Physical Risk – The work environment involves minimal exposure to physical risk.
