As a Summer Intern (Gridtern Program), you will be fully immersed in the energy industry. Your summer will start with us on May 27, 2025, and will be filled with meaningful work experiences, professional development, networking, opportunities to get involved in your community and most importantly, have fun 

 

Intern responsibilities will vary based upon your area of interest and department placement. Applying to this opportunity confirms your interest in being considered for one or more of the below departments for summer 2025: 

Customer Data Governance (Waltham, MA) 

Our Customer Data Office team has 4 scope pillars: Data Product Management, Data Quality, Data Governance, and the Analytics Hub. This team helps to design and guide the development of broad-use customer data products for operational and analytical consumption by business teams, as part of a new integrated centralized customer data platform and analytics hub. As a Gridtern, you will be assisting this team with creating reports and performing data analysis using tools like JIRA to support team operations. Additionally, you will help with managing documentation and provide insights to help improve data driven processes within the company.   

 

Environmental - New England (Waltham, MA) 

Our New England Environmental team is responsible for all of our organization environmental permitting, site investigation and remediation, and ensuring that we remain environmentally compliant.  This team continues to find ways to support the clean energy transition by securing needed permits to build new energy infrastructure, cleanup legacy impacts from historical operations, and ensure present-day utility operations are conducted responsibly.  As a Gridtern, you will be provided with several learning opportunities to understand the different aspects of the environmental field at a utility company.  In addition, you will support the work surrounding mapping environmentally significant areas in our GIS system.  

Environmental Sustainability (Waltham, MA) 

Our US Environmental Sustainability team is focused on the greenhouse gas portion of the Responsible Business Report. We drive sustainability throughout National Grid, from supporting and setting the strategic direction, to influencing the external environment to help change the business. The team supports the work on several activities including Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) disclosures, rate case support, and trade association involvement. As a Gridtern, you will collaborate with peers across National Grid in order to better deliver our environmental commitments, enabling the wider decarbonization of our jurisdictions and ultimately supporting the clean energy transition. You will conduct peer benchmarking to assess sustainability performance and curate articles on sustainability related concepts for our internal distribution channels.   

 

Gas Resource Coordination (West Roxbury, MA) 

Our Gas Resource Coordination team is responsible for all of our gas compliance programs and the customer driven work done throughout our organization. This team continues to find ways to plan and schedule our internal union and external contractor crews – all through managing their work plan against the resources available to ensure all work is executed. As a Gridtern, you will support the clerical aspects of the job, building spreadsheets and Power BI reports to assist with our coordinators. Lastly, you will be traveling to our yards in order to obtain a full exposure to our business. 

Gas Resource Planning (Waltham, MA) 

Our Gas Resource Planning team is responsible for creating yearly work plans for all non-complex gas jobs and ensuring their completion throughout the year. This team manages our company’s capital portfolio along with recalibrating it monthly while providing stakeholders with updates during the year. As a Gridtern, you will have the opportunity to engage in a diverse set of hands-on projects aimed towards supporting the efforts of our Resource Management Analytics team. These projects would include supporting the development and enhancement of reports to enable us to make timely decisions and guide those teams executing the jobs. 

 

NE Electric Contracts and Commercial (Waltham, MA) 

Our New England Electric Contracts and Commercial team oversees the planning and optimization of civil construction projects and manages invoices for all external construction. The team coordinates and schedules all construction projects while fostering close collaboration with both internal and external stakeholders. As a Gridtern, you will have the opportunity to shadow and assist planners, gaining knowledge of scheduling process and ensuring the delivery of projects is both on time and on budget.  Additionally, you will partake in site visits to gain an understanding and insight into the various aspects of construction work. 

 

 

NE Performance Reporting (Waltham, MA) 

Our New England Performance Reporting team provides exceptional project management services to the regulatory group for rate cases and key regulatory filings, securing the revenue needed to provide safe and reliable gas and electrical services to our customers. Their work ensures that we continue to operate efficiently and in compliance with state and federal mandates. As a Gridtern, you will support the preparations for upcoming gas rate cases including organizing crucial information, creating informative documents, and developing executive-level PowerPoint presentations. You’ll communicate with various departments including ongoing collaboration with our legal team. 

NE Safety, Policy & Programs (Waltham, MA) 

Our New England Safety, Policy and Programs team is responsible for reporting on business safety performance and providing analytics as to where we should best direct our resources to generate the safest work environment for our employees. This process involves a multifaceted approach in combining both policy and program management with incident reporting and data analysis to give a comprehensive view of our safety culture. As a Gridtern, you will have the opportunity to be involved during a transitional period of our Incident Management System to a new provider. Additionally, you will assist with data handling, data migrations and system support of various administrative tasks. 

 

New England Strategic Workforce Development (Waltham, MA) 

Our New England Strategic Workforce Development team is responsible for building a sustainable pipeline of talent to ensure our workforce reflects the communities that we serve and operate a net zero system to support our goal of enabling the energy transition for all. This team helps to manage four clean energy academies in our organization from work-ready adults to high school students. As a Gridtern, you will expand your knowledge of workforce development in the energy sector and project management through hands-on experiences. You will create internal and external stakeholder newsletters, assist with creating hands-on STEM activities for both middle and high school students, and support numerous summer events. 

New England Colleague Communication & Engagement (Waltham, MA) 

Our New England Colleague Communication & Engagement Team is responsible for telling the stories of how we are delivering for customers and enabling a clean energy future. This team manages multiple internal communication channels and connects with employees to share successes that showcase the important work the company is doing. As a Gridtern, you will assist in writing for our intranet and employee newsletter, as well as take photos, create videos, and design digital signage. In addition, you will also assist with event planning at our corporate offices and field sites. 

 

Operations Customer Project Management (Northampton, MA) 

Our Operations Customer Project Management team plays a crucial role in ensuring the timely delivery of several intricate customer projects. This team engages with several internal stakeholders to improve the progress of customer projects through the design, permitting and construction processes and works to enhance customer satisfaction and reduce cycle times. As a Gridtern, you will assist with identifying and developing tools and dashboards to improve project management and tracking, thus enhancing operational efficiency. Additionally, you will actively participate in Weekly Team Hub calls and site meetings, and conduct data analysis to uncover opportunities for process improvement.   

Regulatory Strategy (Waltham, MA) 

Our Regulatory Strategy team works to develop both regulatory and policy recommendations to better assist and align to our business and state decarbonization objectives.  This team supports and leads various focus areas including regulatory frameworks, rate design, incentive structures, and stakeholder engagement – while supporting our New York and Massachusetts electric and gas business. As a Gridtern, you will support the quantitative analysis (with support and guidance) of our policy impacts along with conducting both policy and peer utility research. Additionally, you will attend various stakeholder meetings and regulatory proceedings – allowing yourself to gain a deeper exposure to the regulatory strategy issues across electric and gas businesses. 

 

Resource Coordination (Waltham, MA) 

Our Resource Coordination team executes our annual gas work plan, which includes monitoring and scheduling projects. This team continues to work closely with different departments and external stakeholders to prioritize certain tasks and ensure compliance with regulatory and internal standards. As a Gridtern, you will contribute to developing new reporting and tracking systems and support the stabilization of our new Gas Business Enablement (GBE) solution that will be implemented during your time with us.  

What You’ll Need
  • Availability to start on program start date, May 27, 2025, and work full-time (40 hours a week) throughout your duration of the summer 
  • Registered in school as a full-time student and continuing education full-time for Fall 2025 Semester  
  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree 
  • Majoring in Business Administration, Construction Management, Engineering, Sustainability, Psychology, Communication, Public Policy, Pre-Law, Political Science, Economics, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Geology, Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Communications or a related field 
  • Accumulated 18 or more credits and be 18 years of age  
  • Work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States (including CPT & OPT) 
  • Some Gridtern positions will require a valid US Driver’s license with a safe driving history that meets National Grid’s Safe Driver policy. This qualification will be included in the department specific Gridtern role(s) descriptions at point of interview

Salary Range
$20.00 - $26.00 an hour (Undergraduate Student)
$28.00 - $33.00 an hour (Graduate Student)

 

Candidates will be assessed and provided offers based on major, degree type, and class year. Our Gridtern Program does not offer relocation, housing assistance, or public transportation reimbursement for Gridterns; however, we can provide a list of resources to utilize in making your arrangements.

Please note that as a Gridtern, you must reside within our existing footprint, which includes Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, and Vermont. You must also reside within a reasonable, commutable distance to your assigned primary office.
