Job Description:

Production Lead

The Production Lead coordinates, monitors and directs activities and programs within processing, and is expected to do so in the absence of a shift manager. This role provides necessary focus on area support systems such as inventory management of minor ingredients, production schedules, waste reduction, usage and yield, sanitation, technology upgrades and staffing. Additionally, this role interfaces with other support groups such as Maintenance and Quality to ensure safe production of quality pet food that meets or exceeds all quality and food safety specifications established by Mars Petcare in the amount and schedule indicated by business needs.

What will be your key responsibilities?

  • Lead production-Extrusion, Batching, Coating, and Receiving.
  • Ability to review and sign-off on all documentation in processing.
  • Assist the Batching, Coating, and Receiving Operator with production issues and other assistance as necessary to minimize downtime.
  • Assist the Extruder Operator / Relief Operator with changeovers, bin assignments, die setup and
  • any other duties as necessary to ensure Extrusion Operation runs continuously.
  • Follow production schedule and ensure raw material at the line are correct and that finished
  • product numbers are correct.
  • Perform required quality checks.
  • Improve operations through individual and group problem solving and provide leadership in
  • solving problems on the floor and in meetings.
  • Troubleshoot and address reliability issues on packaging lines.
  • Coordinate area activities in such a way as to minimize waste and cost and ensure continuous plant operations.
  • Train all new processing operators.
  • Actively address food safety and quality concerns.
  • Train processing associate on SAP and Red Prairie transactions.
  • Monitor sanitation documentation.
  • Ensure required sanitation is completed effectively and properly.
  • Assess situations early and accurately to take effective and tactful action to correct and improve
  • those situations.
  • Resolve conflicts to create a positive work environment and establish a feeling of partnership.
  • Conduct pre-shift meetings.
  • Provide feedback to associates on the team.
  • Conduct JTM meetings.
  • Solicit new ideas and recommendations from associates.
  • Relay important information to and from management to the shift and across areas of the plant.
  • Communicate with support functions as necessary (i.e., QA, scheduling, management).
  • Recognize trends that may lead to problems.
  • Identify cause and effect relationships. Aggressively seize opportunities to improve results early
  • but not prematurely.
  • Facilitate change while maintaining a high level of productivity.
  • Set priorities with proper sense of urgency and importance.
  • Develop creative ideas and take innovative actions.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Participate in site “Continuous Improvement” groups as appropriate. 
  • Train other area associates in operation of all areas and systems, including safety, quality, and strategy
  • Evaluate associate’s performance to coach and provide continuous development.
  • Submit work orders as required.
  • Associate is responsible for communicating and elevating any quality and food safety concerns to site management.
  • Other similar duties as assigned.

Physical/Environmental Requirements:

  • Must not be afraid of heights; must be capable of working at elevated heights
  • Must not be unusually sensitive to chemicals (contact lenses not recommended)
    Vision correctable to 20/20.
  • Must be able to stand on feet for long periods of time.
  • Standing on a concrete floor
    Wearing proper personal protective equipment (hair net, bump cap, ear plugs, safety shoes, and uniform)
  • Bending, stooping, twist, turn, standing for extended time periods, reaching, climbing stairs, and lifting to 55 lbs.
  • Must be able to adapt to temperature and environmental extremes such as hot to cold, dust dirt and chemicals
  • Able to work with minimal supervision
  • Forklift assignments require OSHA certification and getting on and off frequently

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent education
  • Basic knowledge of personal computers
  • Demonstrated competency in computer and pc software including MS Office and email
  • Must be willing and able to work and accept varying shifts and schedules
  • Ability to understand and effectively communicate in the English language
  • Good basic math, reading and writing skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to work in a self-directed manner with minimal supervision and a positive attitude
  • High Level of mechanical aptitude and knowledge, with good skills in troubleshooting and problem solving
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment
  • Forklift experience
  • Push Pull Lift experience a plus
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a team environment with a positive attitude and minimal supervision
  • Good problem solving and/or troubleshooting skills
  • Working knowledge of Safety, Quality and Material Management Systems and procedures
  • Ability to read and understand the daily production run schedule, and execute to that plan
  • Ability to communicate to managers and team members any production, quality/food safety or other business critical information vital to operations and customer service Company-paid relocation is not available for this position
  • Preferred Leadership experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of GMP's in food manufacturing.

Desired Education

  • High school diploma and 2 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • College degree preferred
