Job Overview:

The Legal Counsel will work out of either our Seattle or Mountain View office, and will be primarily responsible for structuring, drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a wide variety of contracts relating to Coupang’s U.S. entities. In addition, there are a range of legal and compliance issues that will require your advice and counsel across numerous business and support functions. This full-time position will report to the Senior Associate General Counsel. The ideal candidate must possess good, independent judgment; enjoy the intricacies of contract law, while knowing how to compromise on non-core terms in order to move the business forward; and be a team player who can thrive in a fast-moving environment.

What you will do:

  • Lead and execute on a variety of contractual matters across the eCommerce business and corporate functions. You will be hands on with end-to-end responsibility for contracts related to Coupang’s U.S. entities. You will build awareness within the business teams and the procurement department to improve contract standards and risk assessments.
  • Global eCommerce: Provide legal support for the U.S. entities with regard to supply agreements, logistics agreements, and eCommerce compliance and regulatory issues.
  • Advise generally: With support from the U.S. legal team and outside counsel, advise business partners as needed on a variety of legal matters, including employment, regulatory, IP, privacy, insurance, compliance, policies and procedures, and general risk and issue-spotting.
  • Projects and initiatives: Be willing to lead or support legal-related projects and initiatives as needed.

Essential qualifications:

  • Qualified, actively licensed lawyer in the U.S. with 4+ years of experience.
  • Legal experience at a major law firm, or prior relevant in-house experience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including effective verbal and written communication skills in all interactions with senior management, corporate departments and all levels of employees.
  • Exceptional ability to consistently deliver creative, thoughtful, and business-oriented results that appropriately balance growth and risk in a fast-paced environment.
  • A willingness to learn voraciously and take on new scope and challenges.
  • Ability to adapt easily to rapid and diverse business changes.
  • Strong and effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Sound judgment in developing and implementing legal solutions.
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to manage multiple projects, ability to meet deadlines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • This position does require some minimal travel between locations (Seattle, WA; Mountain View, CA; Riverside, CA).

Pay & Benefits

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. At Coupang, your base pay is one part of your total compensation.

The base pay for this position ranges from $120,000/year in our lowest geographic market to $150,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on several factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
