Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Performs digital radiography examinations of head, neck, spine, chest and body. Receives patients and explains examinations to be performed, ensuring patients are properly attired and prepared before positioning them for requested examination. Performs a variety of radiographic examinations such as routine, difficult, and complex studies in department, as well as portable X-Ray, and in the surgical suite as needed.

Practices radiation safety in order to reduce exposure to patients, staff and self. This is achieved by the use of lead aprons, lead gloves, lead shields, lead lined walls and collimation. Film badges are worn by the technologists in compliance with radiation regulations. The incumbent must be aware of and practice the safety policies/procedures of the Medical Center, and participate in quality assurance activities as directed.

Responsible to explain exams to competent patients so that they understand what is to be done, as well as hazards, if any, possible. Incumbent may be required by procedure or patient's condition to monitor vital signs, recognize allergic reactions, and initiate cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Responsible to radiologists and supervisor for the quality and quantity of radiographic exams performed in order to assure a high level of acceptability of radiographs while minimizing patient dose.

Performs clerical duties such as scheduling as instructed to ensure a smooth functioning department, subduties include but are not limited to, registering patients, burning examinations on disc, and answering patient, provider, or nursing staff questions.

Performs dual-energy axial absorptiometry (DEXA) as ordered by primary or specialty care providers for the evaluation of degenerative osteoporotic disease.

Performs general fluoroscopic examinations of multiple body regions, including but not limited to, barium swallow, esophagram, upper GI, small bowel series, cystogram, VCUG, barium enema, myelograms, etc.

Performs fluoroscopic examinations with the use of a C-Arm in an operating room setting., including but not limited to, pain management procedures, implantable device image guidance, ORIF, and general abdominal surgery.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of existing pay, higher or unique qualifications, or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year). Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior military service experience.
Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA

Physical Requirements: Some work may require movement between offices, hospitals, warehouses, and similar areas for meetings and to conduct work. Work may also require walking/standing, in conjunction with travel to and attendance at meetings and/or conferences away from the work site. Incumbent may carry and lift light items weighing less than 15 pounds. Heavy lifting (45 lbs and over); Heavy carrying (45 lbs and over); Straight pulling (0.25 hour); Pushing (0.25 hour); Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Both hands required; Hearing (aid permitted).

  • One or more years creditable experience in an urgent or emergency imaging setting
  • Prior experience in performing daily, weekly, or monthly quality control of X-ray imaging equipment
