Internal Affairs Investigator- Deputy Sheriff IV

The Internal Affairs deputy is responsible for investigating formal complaints alleging serious misconduct and alleged policy violations against staff at the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office.
Specific duties include:
Plan, organize, conduct, and document administrative investigations into allegations of misconduct by sworn and non-sworn ASO employees.
Document and prepare extensive case files to support investigations and conclusions.
Coordinate investigations, reviews, and analyses with ASO divisions and outside agencies.
Organize and complete investigations in mandated time frames.
Plans, organizes, and conducts on- and off-scene interviews of complainants, involved employees, and witnesses.
Document all interviews with appropriate media, including digital recordings and written transcriptions.
Conduct or support ASO generated criminal investigations.
Develop, organize, prepare, and write case reports and visual aids to convey data and case information to stakeholder groups.
Prepares, attends, and testifies at legal proceedings.
Prepare, create, plan, and write weekly case status reports and monthly calendars.
Interprets evidence; coordinate staff training covering internal affairs processes; research law enforcement best practices; respond to requests for additional information.
Perform sensitive and complex duties in conjunction with ASO leadership, attorneys, complainants, and other personnel.
Provides assistance to the Alexandria Police Department and other law enforcement agencies in support of criminal investigations
Reviews inmate telephone, messaging, and video communications.
Other duties as assigned
About the Office
The Alexandria Sheriff's Office is responsible for the operation of the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center, courthouse and courtroom security, service of all court legal documents, execution of court orders, transportation of prisoners, execution of arrest warrants, and general public safety and law enforcement. All powers, responsibilities and duties of the Alexandria Sheriff's Office derive from common law, the Virginia Constitution, the Code of Virginia and the Alexandria Charter.
The Alexandria Sheriff's Office is a highly professional organization with 205 sworn and civilian personnel. The Office is nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Commission on Accreditation for Corrections, Prison Rape Elimination Act, and the National Commission on Correctional Health Care. The Office has been honored by the National Sheriff's Association with the prestigious "Triple Crown Award" for achieving these national accreditations. The Office is also Virginia State certified by the Department of Criminal Justice Services and the Department of Corrections.
Minimum & Additional Requirements
High School Diploma or GED; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must meet age, height and weight standards as established by the Human Resources Department; State Department of Criminal Justice Services and Office of the Sheriff training requirements; good character and background requirements. Candidates for this class are required to meet the requirements set forth in the Deputy Sheriff I, II, III, and IV Career Ladder Program; employees must possess a valid driver's license issued by the state of their residence
Preferred Qualifications
Two-year college degree; be a United States citizen; must possess a valid driver’s license issued by the state of their residence. Candidates must have eight or more years of criminal and/or administrative investigation experience and must possess a Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services law enforcement officer certification.
Prior years of relevant Virginia law enforcement experience will be reviewed and can result in additional salary increases. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Must have strong writing, analytical and organizational skills. Experience conducting interviews and interrogations. Experience in testifying in grand jury and court proceedings. Proficiency with computers, Microsoft applications, use of search engines, and investigative databases such as LInX, VCIN, and NCIC.
Candidates must meet the minimum age and medical standards and complete the following as a condition of employment: background check, polygraph examination, psychological evaluation, and medical evaluation. Candidates must demonstrate good character and meet all background requirements.
