The position is located at the Southern Nevada Health Care System, Medical Center, Women's Health Clinic-Behavioral Medicine. The incumbent will directly support the behavioral health needs of various specialty medical clinics to include but not limited to women's health, nephrology/dialysis, sleep medicine, traumatic brain injury, endocrinology etc. Interventions within these clinics could include individual, group, couples and/or family psychotherapy as well as biofeedback (if appropriately trained). The aim of these interventions is to address behavioral aspects of coping with chronic medical conditions, enhance Veteran engagement in their medical care, or otherwise serve as level of care above Primary Care-Mental Health Integration for complex medical Psychosocial concerns.
Duties may include but are not limited to:
Conducts initial and comprehensive psychosocial assessments of Veterans referred by the above noted specialty medicine staff.
Provides insightful assessment of cases involving mental health diagnoses, catastrophic medical conditions, dementia, and other high-risk diagnoses and determines if effective treatment can be provided with a short-term intervention or requires a longer-term intervention.
Coordinates and provides mental health treatment for Veterans receiving care at various specialty medical clinics; actively contributes to the specialty medical treatment regarding goals, objectives, and interventions for psychosocial and clinical treatment; and recommends adjustments to the Veterans treatment plans and interventions based on any changing needs and/or responses to interventions.
May consult with other specialists in planning treatment for Veterans with co-morbidities.
Provides time limited individual, family, and group therapy services in accordance with the needs identified in the assessment and treatment plan. May provide biofeedback if they are appropriately trained to provide this intervention.
Develops working relationships with other members BHS and organizations having responsibilities for the same patient population. Maintains a current and productive network of referral resources.
Ultimately responsible for all entries in the Veteran's medical record (CPRS) and timely completion thereof, including discharge summaries and patient encounters.
Responsible for completion of all assigned clinical reminders for patients under his/her care, and performance measures assigned to the Care Line.
Participates actively in Performance Improvement (PI) activities.
Participates in a variety of meetings including but limited to, Staff, committee, AD HOC/work-group committee, taskforce, and/or other clinical or administrative activities as directed by the Chief of Behavioral Medicine or Deputy Associate Chief of Staff- Behavioral Health (ACOS-BHS).
Adheres to HIPPA, privacy regulations and VHA Directives related to release of information.
Fully accountable for practice, including Veteran visits, measuring outcomes to interventions, and meeting productivity standards.
Participates fully in peer review, assessing the quality of professional psychology standards provided in the organization.
Responsible for identification of patient problems requiring consultation with other multi-disciplinary medical center staff and making appropriate referrals.
Serves as a consultant, liaison, and point of contact for programs within Behavioral Health services, throughout the hospital, and within the community.
Participates in local, VISN, and national committees/community networking activities as requested by BHS or facility leadership.
Participates in research as appropriate through case finding and referral of patients to clinical investigators engaged in research or through participating in research studies.
Applying new approaches to patient care through integration of approved investigative and research methods in clinical practice, basing interventions on evidence of effectiveness.
Providing and, where appropriate, referring patients, families, and significant others for counseling in health maintenance and disease prevention.
The licensed Psychologist practices independently, using professional judgment and expertise to make decisions about services and treatment provided to Veterans and their significant others. Psychologists who are not licensed must practice under the close supervision of a licensed Psychologist.
