The Environmental Protection Specialist:

Interacts with and provides assistance to multiple diverse stakeholders as well as coordinate and monitor research and demonstration projects that fall into broad categories that relate to air and water quality, greenhouse gas emissions, underwater noise, and safety in maritime transportation
Provides input on a wide range of domestic and international environmental issues that affect the maritime transportation sector. Issues may include but are not limited to maritime decarbonization, reduction of ship-generated underwater noise, control of aquatic nuisance species, and management of emissions (air and water-borne) from ships.
As assigned, serves as a liaison to other US government agencies and maritime stakeholders in support of maritime environmental issues and policy.
Assists project leaders and managers with the development, implementation, and management of research, demonstration, and technical innovation projects in partnership with a diverse range of stakeholders. Assists contracting officer’s representative/agreement officer’s representatives on the monitoring and tracking of progress on META-funded projects.
Provides input in the development of requests for information, requests for proposals, invitations for bids, cooperative agreements, and other documentation to support acquisitions, research, development, demonstration and innovation projects related to program goals.
Assists in the development of policies and plans to support the maritime transportation industry in meeting national and international environmental requirements and advises national and international agencies on the special and unique needs of the industry.
Applies broad basic knowledge of a wide range of scientific principles, techniques, judgment, and originality to assist with resolving key emerging maritime environmental issues within the maritime community.
Provides, at the direction of the Associate Administrator and/or Office Director, support and policy advice on all matters and initiatives related to environment, compliance, technological advancements, and research and development to keep the Maritime Administrator, Deputy Maritime Administrator, and other senior staff apprised of environmental/technological issues and developments as they affect the commercial U.S.-flag merchant marine and ports.

The ideal candidate should have experience in assisting with a wide variety of marine environmental technology research projects and must have experience in the development and implementation of domestic and international policy as well as a wide range of research projects associated with the mitigation of ship generated pollution.
