JOB SUMMARY

The Women’s and Gender Studies (WGS) Librarian is a year-round (12-month), tenure-track library faculty position in Library West, the Humanities & Social Sciences (H&SS) branch of the George A. Smathers Libraries. This position oversees the development, management, and coordination of Library West’s extensive collection of resources encompassing all formats related to women’s and gender studies. While this position's primary collection management focus is women’s and gender studies, an essential secondary aspect involves a strong understanding of its intersections with the humanities and social sciences.

Additionally, this position serves as the Library West Research Services Coordinator, including managing the Library West Research Assistance Desk and On Call scheduling, promoting, and marketing Library West’s research assistance-related services to students and faculty, and maintaining Research Assistance Desk statistics and other related assessment data and reports. The WGS Librarian also works closely with other library employees, providing support in the broader areas of the humanities and social sciences, especially overlapping, interdisciplinary areas, managing specialized WGS subject area reference, outreach, and instruction services, and participating in branch and Libraries-wide general reference, library instruction, and outreach programming.

Library West encourages broad participation in reaching decisions, and consequently, the WGS Librarian will contribute to discussions, provide input, and serve on various committees and teams. This collaborative approach is integral to the library’s mission of excellence and growth. The WGS Librarian will pursue professional development opportunities, including research, publication, and professional service activities to meet library-wide criteria for tenure and promotion.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Cultivate collaborative relationships with academic faculty and students, specifically within the Department of Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies, and interdisciplinary programs supported by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Collaborate with and support affiliated centers and programs such as the Tamara Cohen LGBT Resource Library in the UF Office of Multicultural and Diversity Affairs.

Curriculum and Research Alignment. Stay current with the evolution of academic programs and faculty interests to ensure that library collections and services remain aligned with curriculum and research needs. Inform clientele about relevant resources and services offered by the Libraries.

Active Engagement in Reference Services. Coordinate Library West Research Assistance Desk Services, including scheduling and assessment. Participates in the Humanities and Social Sciences general reference and research assistance program. Contribute to the Smathers Libraries’ online chat reference program, Ask-A-Librarian. Provide advanced reference and research consultation services supporting women’s and gender studies. Develop research guides and other online resources to enhance access to related scholarly materials.

Instruction and Outreach and Student Engagement. Contribute to Library West’s general instruction initiatives using active learning methodologies in traditional classrooms and online settings. Employ a diverse range of educational technologies to facilitate effective instruction. Take part in Library West and Libraries-wide outreach and student engagement programs.

Strategic Collection Management. Define goals and objectives, manage budgets, and coordinate collection development activities in close collaboration with other subject specialists and librarians. Focus on resources for women’s and gender studies and related collections. Evaluate the library’s existing collection strengths and determine areas where collection development efforts should be intensified.

Professional Development and Scholarship. Pursue professional development opportunities, including research, publication, and grants, and engage in professional service activities. Strive to meet the Libraries’ criteria for tenure and promotion, contributing to personal growth and the Libraries’ progress.

EXPECTED SALARY:
$61,231 minimum salary at the Assistant University Librarian rank

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited (or foreign equivalent) program or other relevant advanced degree in subject specialty with some library experience.
Knowledge related to the study of women, gender, and/or sexuality and the ability to support research and education in this and related fields.
Experience in managing or coordinating public or research services within a library setting, or in project or customer service management, demonstrating the ability to schedule and coordinate multiple employees across service points.
Capability to work independently and collaboratively with faculty, students, administrators, and the public and a solid commitment to user-focused service.
Initiative, flexibility, and the ability to adapt and work creatively in a complex, rapidly changing academic work environment.
Competence with information technologies and effectively integrating technology with traditional academic/library services, resources, and instruction.
Demonstrated focus on including individuals of diverse backgrounds, experiences, races, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, and/or perspectives in research, teaching, service, or other work.
Evidence of excellent interpersonal skills, including oral and written communication, including presentation and/or teaching and/or training skills.
Strong potential to meet the requirements for tenure and promotion as outlined in the Library West departmental by-laws.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience managing or coordinating public services or research assistance in an academic library setting.
Bachelor’s degree in Women’s and Gender Studies or related social science or humanities discipline, or considerable work experience in one of these subject areas.
Advanced degree in a related field.
Experience collecting and analyzing user statistics.
Work experience in an academic library with extensive social sciences and/or humanities materials.
Experience in collection management.
Involvement with student engagement and outreach.
Familiarity with best practices in classroom instruction.
Skills related to grant writing and/or funded-project management.
Experience with design and creation of online/web-based materials.
