The Center for Safety Management and Human Factors is one of four Technical Centers at Volpe whose function is to undertake transportation policy analysis and research that contributes to a compelling vision of the 21st Century transportation enterprise and supports decision making in the development, management, operation, and financing of an integrated multimodal national transportation system that meets 21st Century mobility needs for goods and people.

The Director, Center for Safety Management and Human Factors is responsible for:

Providing executive leadership and direction to five technical divisions with a combined federal staffing of approximately 120 employees, a portfolio of 100 projects, and annual obligations of $70M.
Developing plans and policies ensuring that projects for sponsoring organizations are properly formulated, staffed, conducted, and managed to support and advance DOT and OST-R strategic goals as they pertain to safety management and human factors.
Partnering with Volpe Technical Center Directors to bring together cross-functional teams to provide oversight of Volpe's support for safety programs for multiple modal administrations, as well as programs outside the Department of Transportation (DOT), such as U.S. Department of Defense, Department of Housing and Urban  and Development, Transport Canada, and others.
Overseeing the technical integrity and delivery of services for Volpe's mission critical operational programs and oversight of a 90,000 SF purpose-built lab space.
