Maintenance Worker

Major Duties:
This position works under a trails maintenance leader or other higher-graded employees. The incumbent primarily assists in maintenance and construction of graded and paved trails, trail drainage, trail bridges, and guard rails. Assists in the installation, repair and replacement of water diversion bars, cribbing and retainer walls. Removes windfalls, rockslides, surface outcroppings and debris from trails. Builds up tread surfaces in eroded areas. Installs stepping stones at creek crossings where bridges cannot be constructed. Safely and effectively, uses hand power tools required for the job and has the ability to maintain these tools properly. May perform work on roads, trail signs, parking lots, boundary fence; corral repair and construction.
Park Information:
This position serves as a Maintenance Worker (Trails) in the Resource Management Division duty stationed in Tupelo, MS. The incumbent performs a wide range of duties to support management of the Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail and Old Natchez Trace trail segments. Duties include trail maintenance and repairs; operation and maintenance of trail equipment; marking trails to meet public needs; delivering trail materials and supplies to work locations; responding to trail problems reported by visitors (such as downed timber); and working with youth groups and volunteers on trail rehabilitation projects.
Term Appointment:
This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of three years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service.
The National Park Service retains the right to extend the duration of this appointment after selection and/or appointment, based on changes to the regulation governing the number of years term appointments may last. This change, which may be made at the agency's sole discretion and without further competition, shall not be construed or interpreted as the granting of a right to a selectee or employee to such an extension. No extension to a term appointment shall be granted to a selectee/employee to an amount of time that exceeds the maximum number of years authorized under any present or current regulation, unless such regulation expressly allows such action.
