Duties

The successful candidate will perform the full range of duties that include, but are not limited to:

Materials Safety and Liaison Branch (MSLB) Health Physicist Position:

The selectee will serve as a Health Physicist in NMSS/MSST/MSLB in areas of radiation protection activities related to licensing and regulation of byproduct materials. Knowledge and experience are required in many multi-disciplinary scientific fields including health physics (internal and external dosimetry, environmental pathway analysis, radiation biology and physics) as well as statistics and/or epidemiology. Has responsibility for defining and developing needs, interfaces and resources for regulations and supporting guidance associated byproduct materials. Provides technical review and management of projects which will generate health physics internal and external dosimetry models that are needed to develop criteria and standards to provide technical bases for licensing decisions. The selectee will:

  • Have ability to estimate doses to individuals resulting from the exposure to radioactive material using equations and computer models.
  • Interacts with Federal, State, and local agencies and organizations, national and international standards setting organizations, and members of the public to accomplish Agency mission and represent NRC actions as appropriate.

State Agreements and Liaison Programs Branch (SLPB) Health Physicist position

The selectees will serve as a Health Physicist in NMSS/MSST/SLPB in areas of radiation protection activities related to licensing and regulation of facilities and materials associated with the processing, transport, and handling of byproduct, source, and special nuclear materials, including uranium recovery activities, and decommissioning. Identifies resources and develops supporting documentation for the development of the regulatory framework and associated guidance. The selectee will:

  • Interact with Federal, State, and local agencies and organizations, national and international standards setting organizations.
  • Plan and implementation of the Integrated Materials Performance Evaluation Program (IMPEP).
  • Determine the adequacy and compatibility of State programs for the regulation of certain Atomic Energy Act materials (byproduct, source, and special nuclear materials in quantities not sufficient to form a critical mass) and provide technical and materials program assistance when requested by Agreement States.

Uranium Recovery and Materials Decommissioning Branch (URMDB) Health Physicist position

The selectee will serve as a Health Physicist in NMSS/DUWP/URMDB. Knowledge of principles, theory, and practice in the fields or selected aspects of engineering adequate leading radiation protection activities related to licensing and regulation of facilities and materials associated with the processing, transport, and handling of nuclear materials, including uranium recovery activities, decommissioning and the fuel used in commercial nuclear reactors. The selectee will:

  • Leads radiation protection activities related to licensing and regulation of facilities and materials associated with the processing, transport, and handling of nuclear materials, including uranium recovery activities, decommissioning and the fuel used in commercial nuclear reactors. Identifies resources and develops supporting documentation for the development of the regulatory framework and associated guidance.
  • Leads development of and coordinates NRC review of national and international standards for the protection of workers, the public, and the environment from hazards resulting from the possession, use, transfer, decommissioning, transportation and disposal of source, byproduct and special nuclear material.

Reactor Decommissioning Branch (RDB) Health Physicist Position

The selectee will serve as a Health Physicist in NMSS/DUWP/RDB. Knowledge of principles, theory, and practice in the fields or selected aspects of engineering adequate leading radiation protection activities related to the review of radiological health and safety plans, decommissioning plans, radiological survey plans and reports, radiological safety and environmental assessments, and environmental impact statements for site decommissioning and licensing activities.  The selectee will:

  • Leads and performs detailed and complex evaluations relative to the radiological impacts on radiation workers and members of the public from proposed decommissioning plans, license termination plans, applications and radiological health and safety plans.
  • Performs specialized technical analyses requiring computations, to determine compliance with regulatory requirements. Review’s remediation, decontamination and in-place stabilization plans to determine if regulatory criteria are met.
